The study tried mainly to investigate the husbands' co-operation to their wives in participating income- generating activities of SUS. It also explored the relationship between their individual characteristics and their husbands' support. The investigation was conducted in three Unions of Sadar Upazila of Netrokona district. Data were collected through personal interview using structured interview schedule during March to April 2003. Women participating in income generating activities (IGAs) of SUS were interviewed for this purpose. Correlation analysis was employed for exploring relationship between extent of husbands' support towards participation in IGAs and their selected characteristics. The largest proportion of the respondents received low cooperation from their husbands and none received high support for their husbands. Other than IGA management training most of the women received training on different socio-economic empowering issues. Family size. homestead size, family income, daily time use and participation in IGAs of the women were significantly related to their husbands' support towards participation in IGAs.

i) To find out the extent of husbands' support towards participation of women in IGAs of SUS

ii) To find out the extra-economic benefit being received by the participation women in IGAs of SUS

iii) To explore the relationship between husbands' support in SUS income generating activities and their selected characteristics. The selected characteristics  are-age, education, family size, homestead size, family income, cosmopoliteness, credit received, training exposure, agricultural knowledge, daily time use and participation in IGAs.

The study was conducted at sadar upazila of Netrokona district. Eight unions of sadar upazila of Netrokona district is covered by SUS. Form those unions three were selected randomly. These were Pourasava, Singher Bangla and kailati unions. From Pourasava area four women societies, two from Singher Bangla and one from Kailati were selected randomly. The societies were Shikha, Suvazatra, Taranga, Syanir, Uddipon, Golap and Pragati. Ten members from each of the seven societies were again selected randomly. And, thus, the total sample size stands to 70. In the present study the selected characteristics of the farmers constituted independent variables. These were age, education, family size, homestead size, family income, cosmopoliteness, credit received, training exposure, agricultural knowledge, daily time use and participation in IGAs. The only dependent variable was the husbands' cooperation to women in towards participating in income generating activities (IGAs) of SUS. Husband's support of a respondent was operationalized by a 4-point rating scale consisting of 22 dimensions. Each respondent women indicated the extent of her husband's support by checking only one of the four responses, which were quantified as : sufficient- 3, substantial-2, little-1, not at all - 0. The scores obtained by a respondent for the 22 dimensions were added together to get husband's support score towards participating in IGAs. The husband's support score of a respondent woman, thus, could be from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 66. The extra-economic benefits of the IGA- participating women meant lor training on effective handling of IGAs, direct consultation or advice from SUS personnel, family or social power and prestige received through participation in IGAs, etc. were indicated. The benefits other than economic issues were assessed simply through 'yes' and 'no' manner- whether they agreed to the said issues or not. Thus, the frequency was counted for every issue of benefit for a respondent to count percent of the respective issue. Data were collected from the selected samples through interview using structured schedule. Based on the pretest results, the interview schedule was amended and final data collection was done during March to April 2003. Correlation analysis was employed for exploring relationship between extent of husbands' support towards participation in income generating activities and their selected characteristics.

Study reveals that most of the IGA- participating women received a very few support from their respective husbands. While husbands' active support and initiatives help enormously the IGA-participating women. However, husbands' support also depends on various family and social-economic factors in which they live. These should be considered while development planning is executed for the women in rural areas to boost their income and empowerment. Especially respective husband of the woman should be motivated to help his wife toward functional participation in income generating activities. If cooperation between family members and the women participating in income generating activities is improved, economic and other status of the family may substantially be improved. Thus, the distressed women in the rural areas may be empowered through their economic welfare due to participation of IGAs.
