The main thirst of this investigation was to determine the extent of adoption of twelve improved livestock production practices by the farmers and an attempt was were also made to explore relationships between 10 selected characteristics of the farmers and their adoption of improved practices for enhancing livestock production. The study was conducted in two villages of Gaffergoan upazila under Mymensingh district. Data were collected personally by using a structured questionnaire during January and 25 February 2003. Overwhelming majority (89%) of the farmers were found with very low to low level of adoption while the rest (11%) had medium adoption of twelve improved livestock practices. The six characteristics such as level of education. knowledge of livestock production, family income, organizational participation, extension contact and innovativeness of the farmers had positive relationships with the adoption of improved practices towards enhancing livestock production while, traditional mindedness of the farmers had negative relationship. The remaining three characteristics, such as age, family farm size and attitude towards the livestock technology did not have significant relationship with adoption of improved livestock practices.

1. To determine the extent of adoption of improved practices by the farmers towards enhancing livestock production;

2. To explore the relationship between the selected individual characteristics of the farmers and their adoption of improved practices towards livestock production.

The study was conducted in two villages namely, Rouna and Digha of Gaffergoan upazila under Mymensingh district. The total number of farmers of two villages was 502, which constituted the population of the study. Twenty percent of the population i.e.100 farmers were selected randomly as the sample of the study from whom data were collected. Face to face interviewing by using the personal interview schedule was used to collect data during January to February 2003. Ten selected characteristics of the farmers namely age, level of education, knowledge of livestock production, family farm size, family income, organizational participation, extension contact, attitude towards the technology, innovativeness and traditional mindedness were considered as the independent variables of the study. These selected characteristics of the farmers are measured ether by direct scoring or by developing appropriate scales. On the other hand, the twelve practices such as i) use of artificial insemination regularly, ii) fattening of cattle within short duration of time iii) vaccinating the cattle for infectious and epidemic diseases, iv) use of PPR vaccine for goat, v) use of Napier and Para grass as improved cattle feed, vi) use of urea molasses multi nutrient block as improved cattle feed, vii) use of silage as cattle feed, viii) use of balanced feed fbr cattle, ix) use of balanced feed for goat x) place the carcass at underground, xi) cleaning of cattle shed regularly and xii) cleaning of goat shed; regularly were considered as improved livestock practices and the two consecutive years such as 200 I and 2002 were considered as the duration of adoption. Score given to each practice varied from 0 to 2 according to the adoption of improved practices. A respondent farmer could get a score of 2 for adopting cent percent of a practice for a given length of time. Hence, the possible total score earned by a farmer was equal to the number of practices used multiplied by 2 i.e. maximum score could, therefore, be 24. On the other hand, farmers could receive a score 1 for 50% adoption of each of the practices and 0 for no adoption. Correlation coefficients were used to explore the relationships between the dependent and independent variables of the study.

On the basis of above findings it may be concluded that the present level of adoption of improved practices for livestock production by the farmers is very poor. Hence, the farmers should be given proper understanding about improved practices and technologies regarding livestock production by suitable extension teaching methods. Such exposure will increase farmers' knowledge and in the long run farmers wi II accept and adopt better practices for livestock production. At present, acute shortage of manpower exists in the field level of the Department of Livestock Services (DLS). It is one of the vital problems for the dissemination of improved livestock technologies among the farmers. The DLS, therefore, should immediately employ more field level extension personnel at grassroots level to improve this situation. Apart from the DLS, the NGOs and other development agencies should organize effective livestock development programmes through which farmers would be able to know about the improved practices for livestock production in a better way.
