Characterization and Evaluation of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two hundred five lentil (Lens culinaris Medic.) accessions were evaluated at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during winter 2008-2009. Variations were observed in seedling pigmentation, leaf pubescence, leaflet size, tendril length, flower colour, pod pigmentation, pattern of testa and colour of pattern testa. Both the qualitative and quantitative characters of the accession showed moderate to high diversity. High diversity was estimated in number of seeds per plant (74%), 100-seed weight (79%). Moderate diversity was observed in plant height (32%), number of branches per plant (55%), number of pods per plant (49%), days to harvest (58%) and seed weight per plant (68%).

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore during winter 2008-09. Two hundred five lentil accessions were used as the experimental materials. The total area size was 53 m x 21 m (1113 m²). Seeds were sown in four rows of each accession with 30 cm × 50 cm spacing on 17 November 2008. Recommended doses of fertilizers (Urea 50 kg/ha, TSP 90 kg/ha, MP 40 kg/ha, cow dung 5t/ha) were used during final land preparation. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on different parameters were recorded from 5 randomly selected plants and analyzed by Shannon–Weaver Index of Diversity. Shannon –Weaver Index of Diversity:Phenotypic diversity for both qualitative and quantitative traits was determined by using Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index (H´) .H´ ranges from 0 to 1, where 1 indicates the maximum diversity (Yu Li et al., 1996). H´ is determined as: H´= ∑P_ilog₂P_i.Where P_i is the proportion of the total number of accessions belonging to the _ith class. The exact descriptor states define the classes for the qualitative characters while the classes for quantitative characters are defined according to the procedure suggested by Yu Li et al, (1996) where each H´ value was standardized. For the quantitative characters, the overall accessions mean (X) and standard deviation (σ) was used to subdivide the population values (xi) into 10 frequency classes ranging from class 1 (if xi ≤-2σ) to class 10 (if xi≤ X+2σ), the class interval being 0.5σ. The relative frequencies for the different classes were used to calculate the diversity index. The H´ for each character was calculated using MS Excel. The statistic Ho: H´=0 H´ was classified as low, intermediate or high based on Jamago (2000).

Achievement/Findings:

Moderate diversity was observed in qualitative characters. Moderate to high diversity was found in quantitative characters under study. Two distinct colours of seeds were observed. It was also observed that brown (166) and gray (39) seed colours were dominated in the population. High variation in minimum and maximum value of number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, yield per plot, seed weight per plant contributed to high co-efficient of variation (CV). High variation might be due to environmental effects. However, CV up to 30% is acceptable in varietals evaluation (Gomez and Gomez, 1984). Moderate diversity was observed in plant height (32%), number of branches per plant (55%), number of pods per plant (49%), days to harvest (58%) and seed weight per plant (68%). High diversity was found in number of seeds per plant (74%), 100 seed weight (79%). The Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index (H´) was based on the classification of Jamago (2000) where it is high when H´ ≥ 0.75, moderate when H´ =0.50-0.74 and low when H´ ≤ 0.49. It may be concluded that there were high variability among the lentil accessions, which can be exploited as the good source of genetic improvement of lentil. Seeds obtained from this experiment can be used in future.
