The purpose of the study was to assess the change in socio-economic status of CARE-beneficiaries in low-lying haor areas due to interventions of flood proofing project. Mohanganj upajila of Netrokona district was purposively selected as the locale of the study. Hundred two members of both mother club and home gardener of 22 villages were purposively selected as the sample of the study. Data were collected using a structured interview schedule. Descriptive statistics and Co-efficient of correlation test was used to fulfill the objectives of the study. Majority of the respondents (95 percent) had moderately positive change in their socio-economic status. Social participation, health and nutrition education status and condition of food and nutrition intake were the three important aspects of the socio-economic status change. Out of nine selected characteristics of the beneficiaries only three. namely, homestead vegetable garden size, participation in homestead vegetable cultivation and attitude towards CARE had positive and significant relationship with their change in socio- economic status.

1. To determine the change in socio-economic status of the beneficiaries of CARE- Bangladesh because of their participation in flood proofing activities in haor area.

2. To explore the relationship between selected characteristics of the beneficiaries and their change in socio-economic status.

There were 20 upazilas of nine districts under flood proofing project of CARE- Bangladesh. Out of these upazilas Mohanganj upazila of Netrokona district was purposively selected as the study locale. Out of four categories of beneficiaries, only those who were both home gardener and mother club member were purposively selected as the sample of the study. Members of child forum were not selected due to their immaturity and local project society members were the intermediary body for execution of project activities. There were 102 beneficiaries of this type in 22 villages of Mohangnj. Data were collected using a structured interview schedule from the selected beneficiaries. Change in socio-economic status of the CARE beneficiaries was the focus variable of the study. Age, education, family size, homestead vegetable garden size, length of involvement with CARE, communication exposure, training exposure, participation in homestead vegetable cultivation and attitude towards CARE were the selected characteristics of the CARE beneficiaries. A 4-point rating scale was constructed to measure the change in socio-economic status of CARE- beneficiaries. There were 15 aspects related to socio- economic status of a respondent in the scale. A respondent was asked to indicate his perception of change about each of the statements along with a four point scale as 'adequately improved', 'moderately improved', 'little improved', and 'remained unchanged'. The scores assigned to these responses were 4, 2, 3, 1 and 0 respectively. The soci-economic status change score of a respondent was obtained by adding his/her scores of a response for all the aspects. Thus, the socio- economic status change score of the respondents could range from 0 to 60, '0' indicating totally remain unchanged and '60' indicating adequate improvement in his/her socio-economic status. In order to have a clear understanding of the comparative socio- economic change of the beneficiaries in respect of 15 aspects, Change Index (CI) was computed for each of the aspect by using the following formula: Change Index (CI) = Prux 0 + PJjx I + Pmi x 2 + Paix 3 Where, P ru = percentage of beneficiaries with 'remain unchanged' PI; - percentage of beneficiaries with 'little improved' Pm; = percentage of beneficiaries with 'medium improvement' Pai = percentage of beneficiaries with 'adequate improvement'. The statistical measures such as, number, range, mean and standard deviation were used to interpret the data. Pearson's product moment correlation co-efficient was computed to explore the relationship between the focus variable and the selected characteristics of the CARE- beneficiaries. Five percent level of probability was considered for accepting or rejecting the null hypothesis.

It is encouraging for different nation buiIding organizations that the interventions taken by CARE flood proofing project could make moderate change in socio-economic status in case of 95 percent beneficiaries of the locality. The change occurred may be due to change in living condition of majority of the respondents regarding social participation, health and nutrition education status and condition of food and nutrition intake, condition of health and hygiene, sources of income, condition of sanitation. The condition remained more or less unchanged in respect of condition of household assets, condition of land assets and source of drinking water and mostly child education facilities etc. More training facilities on different aspects of socio-economic status of local people can playa vital role in increasing their present status. At the same time, it is necessary to take need based and compatible project activities that hold favourable attitude of the local people towards the organization. The frustrating feature regarding beneficiaries' communication exposure indicates that close supervision and contact with beneficiaries by the field workers are indispensable for making change in their socio-economic status. However, CARE should also motivate non- beneficiaries regarding their development intervention of flood proofing project for making development of the community in totality.
