Preparation and Application of Pre-retting Fungal Culture for the Improvement of Quality of Jute and Allied Fibres

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This is a scarcity of proper retting water in certain jute growing areas of Bangladesh, as a result a huge quantity of barky jute are being produced every year. Past researches revealed that green/ dry jute ribbons could be retted in minimum water using fungus Sporotrichum sp. within 8 days. The experiment was undertaken in the year of 2005 to prepare the desired fungal culture in cheap media to be used for softening/ retting jute ribbons up-grading the low-grade barky jute fibres. From the experimental result, it was observed that the strain of fungus Sporotrichum sp.grown in wheat bran media blended with water and directly applied on low-grade barky jute fibres, up-graded the low-grade fibres to B grade within 8 days. Whereas, the green jute stems were retted in 16 days producing C grade fibres with the same treatment (Sporotrichum sp.). In both cases, the control treatment was untreated and was produced SMR fibre.

Objectives:

To select appropriate media suitable for the growth of promising bacteria and to minimize the retting time as well as to improve the quality of fiber.

Methodology:

The promising and effective fungi were cultutured on potato dextrose broth. The culture was harvested after sufficient growth and was mixed with wheat bran media and blended with water and directly applied on low-grade barky jute fibres for retting or softening. The period of survivability of the fungi with optimum vigor and retting capability were determined.

Achievement/Findings:
