Investigation of Diversified Germplasm of Corchorus Spp. for Tolerance/resistance to Yellow Mite ,polyphagotarsonemus Latus (banks)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the field of JAES, Manikganj. Forty eight accessions of Corchorus spp. were screened against yellow mite in the field of JAES, Manikgan along with 0-9897 as check variety to select the tolerant/resistant germplasm.Among the forty – eight accessions all the accessions showed high intensity of infestation. However, only 3 accessions (1042, 1043 and 1070) received ratting score “2” (Table-5). Among the pre-selected 7 lines. only two accessions (2411, CGR-1617) received rating score “1” and two accessions (4616 & 4706) received rating Score “2” (Table-6). These accessions will be further tested in the field in next year for confirmation of the results.

Objectives:

1.To identify sources of resistant/tolerant jute germplasms against yellow mite

2.To help the breeders in evolving pest resistant/tolerant varieties.

3.To development of resistant/tolerant varieties will help in reducing the cost of production since it does not involve any extra cost for pest control.

Methodology:

A) Germplasm of Corchorus spp. supplied by Germplasm Division was grown in pots. Five plants per pot and each treatment was replicated 4 times.

B) Field: Promising germplasm lines, were selected through screening against yellow mite under controlled and field condition. Each line was 2m long following RCBD with 3 replications. Percentage of infestation and rating score of yellow mite was recorded weekly during the infestation period. Following records were kept:

1) Date of sowing

2) Date of inoculation

3) Time of infestation

4) Index of mite infestation (Rating score)

5) Weather report

6) Collection of seed from selected plants.
