Acceleration of Jute Retting Speed by Nitrogenous Plant Materials.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute retting is usually started in the month of July and completed by the month of September. Retting is done in pond, canal and river in a short retting season and inadequate supply of water. As a result a huge quantity of low quality fibres are produced every year. With a view the experiment was undertaken to find out the effect of using different promising nitrogenous plant dhaincha in the ret of jute for the acceleration of retting speed and improvement of fibre quality and conducted at Jute Research Regional stations Chandina, Faridpur, Kishoregonj and JAES, Manikgonj in the period of 2009. It was observed that addition of 20% nitrogenous plant dhaincha in the jak of CVL-1and O-9897 jute, retting was completed within 13-18 days in comparing with other percentage of nitrogenous plant materials used in the were study. In all the stations the fibre among the resultant fibres found better in terms of colour and quality when retting was conducted by using 20% nitrogenous plants. At jute Research Regional Station Kishoreganj was not found promising.

Objectives:

To find out the effect of using different promising nitrogenous plant dhaincha in the ret of jute for the acceleration of retting speed and improvement of fibre quality.

Methodology:

Jute plants (CVL-1 and O-9897) were grown in Jute Research Regional stations at Chandina, Faridpur, Kishoregonj and JAES, Manikgonj of BJRI following recommended culrural practices. Jute plants were harvested at budding stage. Jaks were covered with 1% dhaincha, 10% dhaincha and 20% dhaincha of green jute weight as a retting accelerator. The end point of retting was observed critically. The fibre were extracted, washed and dried. Finally, produced fibres were assessed in respect of of their quality, percent cuttings, color and grade.

At jute Research Regional Station Kishoreganj was not found promising. In case of tossa jute O-9897, good fibre was obtained from 20% dhaincha as covering materials of jute weight at Chandina, kishoregonj and Manikgonj with brown to golden color in apperance. But the best fibre was obtained from Faridpur. In case of deshi jute CVL-1, very good fibre with white color was obtained from 20% dhaincha as covering materials of jute weight at Chandina and Faridpur. But good fibre was obtained from Manikgonj.
