Find Out Diversified Germplasm of Corchorus Spp. for Tolerance/resistance Against Yellow Mite

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiment was carried out in the fields of Central station, Dhaka, JAES,Manikganj and Chandina during jute season 2003 in order to know the sources of resistance/tolerance against jute yellow mite. Previously selected 4 promising mite tolerant accessions of Corchorus spp. were sown in lines in the field of Central Station Dhaka. CRS (Manikgonj) and Chandina to see their regional effects. Each line was 2 m long following RCBD and replicated 3 times. Rating and percentage of infestation were taken during the peak period of infestation. All the forty-six accessions showed highest intensity of infestation i.e. none was showed resistant/tolerant. Among the selected four accessions, three (4706, 4616, CGR-1617) received rating `2’. Lowest (16.12%) infestation was observed CGR-1617 at JAES, Manikgonj.

Objectives:

1.To identify sources of resistant/tolerant jute germplasms against yellow mite

2.To help the Breeders in evolving pest resistant/tolerant varieties.

3.To development of resistant/tolerant varieties will help in reducing the cost of production since it does not involve any extra cost for pest control.

Methodology:

A) Germplasm of Corchorus spp. supplied by Germplasm Division was grown in pots. Five plants per pot and each treatment was replicated 4 times.

B) Field: Promising germplasm lines, were selected through screening against yellow mite under controlled and field condition. Each line was 2m long with 3 replications. Percentage of infestation and rating score of yellow mite was recorded weekly during the infestation period.
