Study of Kenaf and Mesta for Resistance/tolerance to Spiral Borer and Mealy Bug

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiment was carried out in the fields of Central station, Dhaka, JAES,Manikganj and Chandina during March to Aguast 2002, following RCBD with three replications in order to know the sources of resistance/tolerance against spiral borer and mealy bug. In Faridpur and Dhaka none of the cultivars were free from borer infestation. Significant differences were observed among the kenaf lines with regard to mean percent of plant infestation, mean infestation length, mean gall length and amount of plant damage. The results indicated variable host reaction among kenaf lines. Of five advance lines screened, two (PS-1 and KE-3) were recorded resistant (R) in both experimental plots of CRS (Manikganj) and Rangpur were completely free from the spiral borer infestation.

Objectives:

1.To identify sources of resistant/tolerant Kenaf and Mesta germplasms against Mealy bug and Spiral borer.

2.To help the breeders in evolving pest resistant/tolerant varieties.

3.To development of resistant/tolerant varieties will help in reducing the cost of production since it does not involve any extra cost for pest control.

Methodology:

A)Screening of Kenaf(Hibiscus canabinus) and Mesta (H.sabdarifa) germplasms for resistant/tolerant to Mealy bug and Spiral borer was done in the experimental field of Gene Bank Department.

B)Selected advanced lines supplied by Kenaf and Mesta Department was srcreened in the field. Kenaf and Mesta

seeds were sown in the line with three replication.The recommended pakage of agronomic practices for kenaf and mesta cultivation was followed from sowing onwards.The target pests was adopt no plant protection measure with a view to facilitate maximum infestation of the crop/plant.Observation regarding percent of Plant infestation(PPI) and amount of plant damage was recorded during the infestation period from the each line as per following formula.

Intensity of attack= this was calculated from the mean gall length of ten affected plants for each line.
