Comparative Studies on Cost Effectiveness of Low Cost Retting Techniques of Jute/ Kenaf/ Mesta for Quality Up-gradation Developed by BJRI, Bangladesh and Jci, India

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute retting is accomplished in water of various sources such as pond, canal, river, ditches etc. within 15 to 18 days. To reduce the jute retting time and to obtain the better quality jute fibre it was revealed by various researches that jute ret must be covered by some covering materials such as aquatic plants, dhaincha, water hyacinth, straw, jute hessian (low cost retting technique, developed by JCI, India) etc. Bangladesh Jute Research Institute has recommended that jute ret covered with water hyacinth, dhaincha produced better quality jute fibre. Jute Corporation of India developed and recommended that jute ret covered with jute hessian was a cost effective retting technique by which the quality of jute fibre might be developed at least one grade. The study was undertaken to identify the cost effective retting technique between the recommended low cost jute retting techniques by BJRI (Bangladesh) and JCI (India). It was conducted at the regional stations Kishoreganj, Chandina (Comilla) and JAES, Jagir, Manikganj and sub station Tarabo (Narayanganj) in the period of 2009. Both the varieties (CVL-1 and O-9897) were grown in all above mentioned locations which were harvested and retted at the retting tanks of the respective stations in identical conditions, following BJRI recommended improved retting technologies and low cost retting technologies developed by JCI, India. From the experimental results, it was found that good quality jute fibre (O-9897) were obtained from JCI, Indian technique (hessian) and BJRI (water hyacinth) technique in all the experimental locations. But JCI, Indian technique’s preliminary retting cost was higher than Bangladesh (water hyacinth) technique..In case of CVL-1 good quality jute fibres was obtained from JCI, Indian technique than Bangladesh (dhancha & straw) technique. It is observed that JCI, Indian technique (hessian) and BJRI (water hyacinth) technique produced good quality fibre but BJRI (water hyacinth) technique (use as covering materials) was found lower preliminary cost of retting.

Objectives:

To identify the cost effective retting technique between the recommended low cost jute retting techniques by BJRI and JCI, India.

Methodology:

Jute plants (CVL-1 and O-9897) were grown in Jute Research Regional stations at Chandina, Faridpur, Kishoregonj and JAES, Manikgonj of BJRI following recommended culrural practices. Jute plants were harvested at budding stage. Jaks were covered with water hyacinth, dhaincha and hessain as covering material in different jute ret. Cost analysis was made for each technique. The end point of retting was observed critically. The fiber were extracted, washed and dried. Finally, produced fibres were assessed in respect of of their quality, percent cuttings, color, strength and grade.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experimental results, it was found that good quality jute fibre (O-9897) were obtained from JCI, Indian technique (hessian) and BJRI (water hyacinth) technique in all the experimental locations. But JCI, Indian technique’s preliminary retting cost was higher than Bangladesh (water hyacinth) technique..In case of CVL-1 good quality jute fibres was obtained from JCI, Indian technique than Bangladesh (dhancha & straw) technique. It is observed that JCI, Indian technique (hessian) and BJRI (water hyacinth) technique produced good quality fibre but BJRI (water hyacinth) technique (use as covering materials) was found lower preliminary cost of retting. But JCI, Indian technique’s preliminary retting cost was higher than Bangladesh (water hyacinth) technique. In case of CVL-1 good quality jute fibres were obtained from JCI, Indian technique than Bangladesh (Dhancha & straw) technique. It was observed that JCI, Indian technique (hessian) and BJRI (water hyacinth) technique produced very good quality fibre but BJRI (water hyacinth) technique (use as covering materials) was found lower preliminary cost of retting.
