Development of Breeding Materials of Kenaf Through Intraspecific Hybridization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

F3 segregating generations of 36 cross combinations of kenaf were raised in the field at JAES, Manikganj, having 2 lines of 1.5m long row per cross combination. Performance of 9 combinations i.e. HC-2 X CPI-72126, HC-95 X CPI-72126, HC-95 X PI-319192, HC-2 X CPI-72126, DS/022 X CPI-72126, DS/024 X X/062, FJ/017 X HC-95, NY/197 X CPI-72126 and SM/004 X CPI-72126 were found good in respect of population, growth uniformity, smoothness and other attributes. One to three plants were selected from most of the F3 families in respect of growth and seed yield.

Objectives:

To develop a variety having the potentiality to grow throughout the year to feed paper pulp mills with regular supply of raw materials.

Methodology:

The experiment was under taken with F3 segregating generation of 36 cross combinations of kenaf in the field at Manikganj Regional Station having 2 lines of 1.5m long row per cross combinations. 9 combinations i.e. HC-2 X CPI-72126, HC-95 X CPI-72126, HC-95 X PI-319192, HC-2 X CPI-72126, DS/022 X CPI-72126, DS/024 X X/062, FJ/017 X HC-95, NY/197 X CPI-72126 and SM/004 X CPI-72126 were used in respect of population, growth, uniformity, smoothness and other attributes. Recommended intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done for raising the parental materials.
