Study of Cost Effectiveness of Different Covering Materials on Jak and Their Effect on Fibre Quality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute retting is accomplished in the water of various sources such as pond, canal etc. within 12-18 days. In traditional retting practices generally retting taken longer time and produce low quality fibre. Research findings revealed that use of covering/ weighting materials (straw, water hyacinth) played an important role in the acceleration of retting speed and production of quality fibre. Previous research revealed that the water hyacinth covered the jak produced good quality fibre than the other covering materials. The experiment was undertaken to identify the cost effective retting technique using different covering/ weighting materials and their effect on fibre quality, It was carried out in Jute Agriculture Experimental station at Manikgonj by using different covering materials as treatment T1 = Rice straw, T2 = Water hyacinth, T3 = Hessian, T4 = Earth chunk, T5 = Banana logs with polyethylene and T6 = Mixture of earth chunk and banana logs in the period of 2012. Here, jute variety was used Bjri tossa pat-4 and CVL-1. In case of Bjri tossa pat-4, from harvest to drying, the cost of labour & material was highest with rice straw (Tk. 80 per jak) and lowest was with water hyacinth (Tk. 50 per jak), Hessian (Tk. 50 per jak) and earth chunk (Tk. 50 per jak). Highest retting time was 17 days from banana logs with polyethylene. Retting time ranged from 14-17 days. The cutting percentage was highest (14.12%) from Mixture of earth chunk and banana logs and the lowest (8.0%) was from water hyacinth. In case of CVL-1, from harvest to drying, the cost of labour & material was highest with rice straw (Tk. 80 per jak) and lowest was with water hyacinth (Tk. 50 per jak), Hessian (Tk. 50 per jak) and earth chunk (Tk. 50 per jak). The cutting percentage was highest (11.24%) from the mixture of earth chunk and banana logs with polyethylene and the lowest (6.45%) was found from water hyacinth as covering material.

Objectives:

To identify the cost effective retting technique using different covering/ weighting materials and their effect on fiber quality.

Methodology:

Jute plants (O-72 and CVL-1) were grown at JAES, Manikgonj of BJRI following recommended culrural practices. Jute plants were harvested at budding stage. Jaks were covered with rice straw, water hyacinth, hessian, earth chunk, banana logs with polyethylene and mixture of earth chunk and banana logs. The end point of retting was observed critically. The fibre were extracted, washed and dried. Finally, produced fibres were assessed in respect of of their quality, percent cuttings, color and grade.
