Comparative Study on Fibre Obtained from the Jute Plants Retted with Leaves, Without Leaves and Ribbon Retting Technique for Fibre Quality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Previous research reveled that if retting is conducted by defoliated green jute bundle, retting was completed earlier and produced quality fibre. The experiment was undertaken for the comparison of both the fibre obtained from retting with leaves, without leaves and ribbon. The experiment was conducted at JAES, Manikgonj, Jute Research Regional station at Faridpur, Chandina and Sub-Station at Monirampur in the period of 2012. In case of with leaves technique, in olitorius jute, cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 7.42–12.32%. The lowest cuttings percentage (7.42%) was recorded at Monirampur in BJRI tossa pat-4. Similarly, in capsularis jute, cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 7.69–11.40% and the lowest cuttings percentage (7.69%) was recorded at Faridpur in CVL-1.Fibre quality was good. In case of without leaves technique, in olitorius jute, Cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 8.41–12.33%. The lowest cuttings percentage (8.41%) was recorded at Faridpur. Similarly, in capsularis jute, cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 8.25–12.36%.and the lowest cutting percentage (8.25%) was recorded at Chandina from CVL-1. Fibre quality was very good. In case of ribbon retting technique, both tossa and deshi jute, there have no cuttings and all fibre were apparently of better quality.

Objectives:

To compare the yield and quality of both the fiber obtained from retting with leaves, without leaves and ribbon retting technique.

Methodology:

Jute plants (O-9897, BJRI tossa pat-4, CVL-1 and BJRI desh pat-7) were grown in Jute Agriculture Experimental station, Jagir, Manikgonj and Jute Research Regional station at Faridpur, Chandina and Sub-station at Monirampur of BJRI following recommended culrural practices. Jute plants were harvested at budding stage. Jaks were covered with different covering materials. The end point of retting was observed critically. The fiber were extracted, washed and dried. Finally, produced fibres were assessed in respect of of their quality, percent cuttings, color and grade.

Achievement/Findings:

In case of with leaves technique, in olitorius jute, the results showed that the highest fibre yield was found 2507 kgha^-1 at Monirampur from BJRI tossa pat-4 and the lowest fibre yield was found 2163 kgha^-1 at Chandina from O-9897. This may be due to the higher green weight in the respective location. Cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 7.42–12.32%. The lowest cuttings percentage (7.42%) was recorded at Monirampur in BJRI tossa pat-4. Similarly, in capsularis jute the highest fibre yield was found 2895 kgha^-1 at Manikgonj from CVL-1 and the lowest fibre yield was 2250 kgha-1 at Faridpur from Bjri deshi pat-7. Cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 7.69–11.40% and the lowest cuttings percentage (7.69%) was recorded at Faridpur in CVL-1.Fibre quality was good. In case of without leaves technique, in olitorius jute, the highest fibre yield was found 2875 kgha-1 at Faridpur from O-9897 and the lowest was found 2283 kgha-1 at Chandina from the same variety. Cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 8.41–12.33%. The lowest cuttings percentage (8.41%) was recorded at Faridpur. Similarly, in capsularis jute, the highest fibre yield was found 3400 kgha-1 at Manikgonj and the lowest fibre yield was 2200 kgha-1 at Chandina. Cuttings percentage among four stations ranged from 8.25–12.36%.and the lowest cutting percentage (8.25%) was recorded at Chandina from CVL-1. Fibre quality was very good. In case of ribbon retting technique, in olitorius jute, the highest fibre yield was found 2625 kgha-1 at Faridpur from O-9897 and the lowest fibre yield was 2305 kgha-1 at Chandina from Bjri tossa pat-4. Similarly, in capsularis jute the highest fibre yield was found 3465 kgha-1 at Manikgonj from CVL-1 and the lowest was 2198 kgha-1 at Chandina from the same jute variety These highest and lowest yields in both cases may be due to the respective highest and lowest green or ribbon weight of jute from respective locations. In ribbon retting technique, there have no cuttings and all fibre were apparently of better quality.
