Impact of Optimum Field Duration of Jute Crop in Ribbon Retting in Respect of It’s Technical and Economic Viability.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the time of present situation of shortage of retting water especially in the northern areas of Bangladesh ribbon retting is essential for jute cultivation. Previous research revealed that ribboning at the age of 90 to 100 days is appropriate ribboning time for ribbon retting process. The experiment was conducted at Jute Research Regional and Sub-Stations of Rangpur, Faridpur, Chandina and Monirampur for ribboning at different aged of jute plants to find out as a suitable ribboning technique in the period of 2012. The results showed that the highest fibre yield 2766 kgha-1 was found at Monirampur from 120 days aged plant harvested but the lowest was 1963 kgha-1 at Faridpur from 80 days aged plants. No cuttings were obtained in any of the fibre studied. Maximum retting time was required by the 120 days aged plants. The lowest fibre yield was obtained at 80 days aged plants. Jute retting time was higher 19.0 days at Monirampur station but the lowest was found 9.0 days at Faridpur station. There was no cutting percentage at 80-100 days aged plants and best quality fibre was obtained but the cutting percentage was ranged from 1.1% to 2.3% at 110-120 days aged plants in the study areas. So, it may be concluded that 120 days duration increased yield but decreased the fibre quality. Physical properties viz. strength and breaking twist of fibre were increased with the increased of jute plants aged. The value of fineness and brightness were decreased with the increased of jute plant aged.

Objectives:

To find out as a suitable ribboning technique by ribboning and extracting the fibre from a specific age of jute plants.

Methodology:

Jute plants (BJRI tossa pat-4) were grown in Jute Research Regional station at Rangpur, Faridpur, Chandina and Sub-station Monirampur of BJRI following recommended culrural practices. Jute plants were harvested at different ages such as 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 days respectively. Jaks were covered with rice straw/ water hyacinth as covering materials. The end point of retting was observed critically. The fibre was washed and dried. Finally, produced fibres were assessed in respect of of their quality, percent cuttings, color and grade.

The highest breaking twist 24.3 TPI was obtained from 120 days aged plants and the lowest 18.3 TPI was found from 80 days aged plants. The highest brightness 25.94% was obtained from 100 days aged plants and the lowest 24.18% was found from 120 days aged plants. Again, the highest fineness 36.13 µ was obtained from 90 days aged plants and the lowest 33.10 µ was found from 120 days aged plants.
