Development of Breeding Materials of Mesta Through Intraspecific Hybridization

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

F4 and F5 segregating generation of 6 cross combinations involving prickled recommended cutlivar HS-24, smooth fibre type SAMU’93, smooth vegetable type PI-274245 and early maturing and smooth type 2005 with selected plants were sown in the field at JAES, Manikganj and Manirmapur having 2 lines of 1.5m long row for each treatment. A wide range of variation in respect of maturity, plant height, growth vigor and smoothness were observed. Few promising segregants were selected and also one to three plants were selected in most of the F4 and F5 lines in respect of earlyness, smoothness, growth habit and other attributes.

Objectives:

To develop breeding materials of Mesta in respect of earliness, smoothness, quick growth and other attributes.

Methodology:

In order to combine early maturing characters from early maturing line and smoothness from smooth lines with the recommended high yielding variety HS-24, parents including one high yielding cultivars were crossed without reciprocals. F4 and F5 segregating generation of 6 cross combinations involving prickled recommended cutlivar HS-24, smooth fibre type SAMU’93, smooth vegetable type PI-274245 and early maturing and smooth type 2005 with selected plants were sown in the field at JAES, Manikganj and Manirmapur having 2 lines of 1.5m long row for each treatment. Proper intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done for uniform growth.

Achievement/Findings:
