Efficiency of Some Egg and Larval Parasitoids Against Pod Borer, Helicoverpa Armigera Hubner on Chickpea in Laboratory

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to know the efficiency of egg and larval parasitoids against chickpea pod borer Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) in the screen house of Entomology Division, BARI during 2006-2007. Both the parasitoid effectively parasitised the eggs and larvae of chickpea pod borer. Parasitism efficiency of egg parasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis was 71.4% and the larval parasitoid, Bracon habetor was 83.3%.

Objectives:

To find out the parasitism efficiency of different parasitoid and management of chickpea pod borer, H. armigera Hub.

Methodology:

Larvae of chickpea pod borer were collected from field and placed in the insect rearing box covered with 32 mashes net. Twig of chickpea plant with pods were collected from field for continuous source of larval food. Pupae were collected and placed in the soil of plastic tray. After emergence of moths, two pairs of newly hatched male and female were released in a wooden box (75 cm x 60 cm) covered with 70 mashes net with chickpea plant. After oviposition the adult laid eggs. Total eggs were counted carefully. One-day-old Trichogramma chilonis adults were released @ 1 parasitoid/egg. Each treatment was replicated three times. A control batch was also maintained where Trichogramma chilonis adult were not released. Percent parasitism was recorded till the mortality of the adults. Twenty larvae (4th – 5th instars) of H. armigera were released inside the wooden box with twigs of chickpea plant with pods. Five pairs of Bracon habetor were released in each wooden box. A control batch was also maintained without release of Bracon habetor. There were three treatment replicates. Three days after release of the parasitoids, the parasitized /dead larvae were counted and recorded. The screen house experiments were conducted at a temperature of 29 ± 2o C and 58 ± 10% RH.
