Characterization of Grass Pea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three hundred accessions of grass-pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, RARS, Jamalpur. Qualitative variation was found in seedling vigor, plant growth stage, growth habit, nodes per plant, stem wing width, colour of leaf, petiole, flower and immature pod, shape of leaflet, flower bud and pod, size of leaf, flower and flower bud, leaf tendrils and pod curvatiure. The accessions did not show any variation in stem colour, branch arrangement, leaf type, number of leaflets per leaf and pod beak shape. The accessions were produced 18.2 to 62 cm plant height and 5 to 12 primary branches per plant. Days to first and 50% flowering ranged from 46 to 76 days and 56 to 89 days, respectively. Number of pods per plant ranged from 5 to 41 and seeds per pod was 3 to 5. Pod length, width and 100-seed weight ranged from 1.8 to 4 cm, 1.6 to 3.0 cm and 8.0 to 12.2g, respectively. The highest coefficient of variation was found in number of pods per plant (29.27%) and the lowest in pod maturation period (4.02%).

Objectives:

(i) to study the genetic variability, (ii) to identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another, (iii) to identify the promising accessions for varietal development and (iv) to increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 300 accessions of grasspea accessions at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur during 2008-2009. The seeds were sown in the field on 20 November, 2008. The distance between row to row was 30 cm and block to block was 1m in RCBD design. Measurement was performed on five individual plants of each accession. Optimum cultural practices were followed grasspea production system. Data was recorded in qualitative and quantitative characters as per Descriptors for Lathyrus spp. IPGRI, 2000.

Achievement/Findings:

Poor, intermediate and vigorous seedling vigour were observed among 300 ascensions. Low, medium and high plant growth rate were found in seedling stage I and II. Narrow and medium stem wing, small and medium leaf size were noticed. Linear and lanceolate leaflet shape, green and purple-green leaf petiole, globular and intermediated flower bud shape, small and medium in flower and flower bud size, blue and pink flower, blue and violet flower vein, light green and green calyx were observed. All the accessions were showed green stem colour, branch arrangement mainly on lower part of the plant, bipinnate leaf type, two pair leaflets per leaf and pointed pod beak shape. Prostrate, spreading, semi-erect and erect plant growth habit; few, medium and many nodes per plant; short, medium and long leaf tendrils were exhibited. Straight, slightly curved and curved pod curvature; light green, green, dark green, greenish-purple immature pod; oblong-elliptical, medium oblong-elliptical and broad linear pod shape were observed among the grasspea accessions. The plant height ranged from 18.6 to 62 cm. Primary branches ranged from 2 (BD-3518) to 5 (BD-3589). Maximum length of primary branch was observed in BD-3520 (58.2 cm) and minimum in BD-3688 (15 cm). Early flowering was observed in BD-4755 (46) and late in BD 3538 (76). Days to 50% flowering ranged from 89 days (BD-3601) to 56 days (BD-9755). Early maturity was observed in BD-4755 (87) and late maturity in BD-3590 (110). Highest pods per plant was observed in BD-3537 (41) and lowest in BD-3715 (5). Pod length showed highest in BD 3717 (4) and lowest in BD-3709 (1.8). Pod width was height in BD-3767 (3) and lowest in BD-3709 (1.6). BD-3709 (12.2 g) showed maximum of 100-seed weight and minimum in BD-4768 (8 g). Seed yield per plant ranged from 16g (BD-3504) to 45.1 g (BD-3592).
