Evaluation of Kenaf and Mesta Germplasm.for Tolerance/resistance Against Spiral Borer and Mealy Bug

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the field of JAES, Manikganj to find out sources against spiral borer and mealy bug. Among the 92 mseta line 18 lines (Line No. 2013, 2508, 2535, 2711, 2754, 2800, 3416, 4371, 4386, 4398, 4399, 4401, 4664, 4604, 4904, 4382, 4384 and 4684) were found completely free from mealy bug and none of the line was infested by the spiral borer at JAES as shown in table 6. Mealy bug infestation was ranged from 0 to 40%. Plant height of normal plant was comparatively higher than the infested plant. Among the 49-kenf lines screened at JAES 2 lines (Line No. 76 and 98) were found free from mealy bug and no spiral borer infestation was found as shown in table 7. Plant height of normal plant was higher than the infested plant. Among the 37 lines along with HS-24 as check of mesta variety screened in the central sration 11 lines (Line No. 127, 128, 133, 136, 137, 139, 144, 147, 148, 149, 150) were found free spiral borer and more was infested with mealy bug.

Objectives:

1.To identify sources of resistant/tolerant Kenaf and Mesta germplasms against Mealy bug and Spiral borer.

2.To help the Breeders in evolving pest resistant/tolerant varieties.

3.To development of resistant/tolerant varieties will help in reducing the cost of production since it does not involve any extra cost for pest control.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in collaboration with Gene bank Department and Kenaf and Mesta Department. About 92 lines of Mesta with HS-24 as check and 49 lines of Kenaf with HC-2 and HC-95 as check were screened at Central station, Dhaka. Seeds of each lines were sown in 2m lines following RCBD with 3 replications. The recommended package of agronomical practices for cultivation was followed from sowing to harvest. The target pests adopted no plant protection measures with a view to facilitate maximum infestation to the crop. data was collected regularly during the period of infestation.
