Characterization of Kenaf (hibiscus Cannabinus) Germplasm Collected from Different Sources in 1997

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at central station, Dhaka to characterize of seventeen accessions of kenaf germ plasm collected from different sources were sown on 16 March, 1997 along with the check varieties HC-2 and HC-95. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Hibiscus descriptor. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fiber weight and dry stick weight accessions 4939, CGR 1582, CGR 1568 and CGR 0845 performed better than the check varieties HC-2 and HC-95.

Objectives:

To characterize some of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) germplasm as per Hibiscus descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. The accessions viz. CGR 0239, CGR 5074, CGR 5078, CGR 0845, 5044, 5016, 4996, 4670, CGR 1568, 1580, CGR 1582, CGR 1640, CGR 1647, CGR 1649, CGR 1653, 3795 and 4939 were sown on 16 March, 1997 with check varieties HC-2 and HC-95. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected.
