Evaluation of Tossa Jute (c. Olitorius) Germplasm for Morpho-agronomic Attributes, Diseases and Pest Tolerance

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj, Dhaka and Faridpur to evaluate for morph o-agronomic attributes, disease and pest tolerance of fifteen accessions of tossa jute (C. olitorius) along with check varieties O-4 and O-9897 were sown on 16 April, 1997. The experiment was laid out in RCBD design with three replications. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. Pigmentation data, disease and pest infestation data were collected at 60 days after sowing and sowing to harvest respectively. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes, disease and pest status as per Corchorus descriptor. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Based on the major yield contributing characters, disease and pest infestation status accessions 4254, 4320, 4562 and 4571 performed better than check varieties.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in RCBD design with three replications. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The fifteen accessions viz. 4233, 4235, 4254, 4311, 4316, 4317, 4319,4320, 4323, 4562, 4565, 4566, 4567, 4571 and 4572 were sown on 16 April, 1997 with check varieties O-4 and O-9897. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Disease, pest infestation and fiber properties data were collected from sowing to before harvesting period. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected.
