Preliminary Yield Trials of Kenaf Strains

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Three lines of kenaf were isolated for their early maturing characters and one line (purple stem) for its high resistance to disease and pest. These liens were tested in 2001 at four locations- JAES, Manikganj, Faridpur and Monirampur. It was observed that KE-1 and KE-3 showed better performance than recommended variety HC-95 at JAES and Faridpur in respect of fresh weight with leaves and without leaves, fibre wight and stick weight whereas KE-2 and KE-3 showed better performance than recommended variety HC-95 at Rangpur.

Objectives:

To develop new Kenaf varieties having characteristics of early maturing but quick growing.

Methodology:

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) produces more biomass in poor soil and has great potentiality as renewable raw materials for paper pulp production. Due to its long vegetative period, farmers show little interest to grow. For overcome this purpose, three lines 1641/A (KE-1), 1641/B (KE-2) and 1641/C (KE-3) of kenaf were isolated for their early maturing character and one line (purple stem) for its high resistance to disease and pest. These lines were tested in 2001 at Manikganj, Rangpur, Faridpur and Monirampur stations along with recommended variety HC-95 as check in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replication. The seeds were sown in mid March and harvested in Mid-August. Data were recorded on dates to sowing, germination,first flowering plant population at final thinning and at harvest, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight.Observations and records on disease and pest incidence, quick growing,smoothness and earliness were done.

Achievement/Findings:
