Advanced Yield Trial of Smooth Mesta (samu’93)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

During 1994-1997, the line which was fully prickle and bristle free purified and tested against the recommended variety HS-24. In 1998 and 1999, the smooth mesta strain were tested along with recommended cultivar HS-24. In 2000, the line was tested at two locations (JAES, Manikganj and Faridpur). The seeds were sown on 09.05.2000 at JAES and 05.05.2000 at Faridpur Regional station in RCBD with two replications. The plants were harvested at two times i.e. at 120 days after sowing and at 150 days after sowing. Fifteen plants were selected at random from each replication in one time of harvest and necessary data were taken.

Objectives:

To evaluate selected genetic resources of Mesta in respect of smoothness, earliness and high biomass production at preliminary and advanced yield trial levels.

A few fibre type plants of mesta were identified as fully prickle and bristle free in a farmers field at Khankhanapur Rajbari in 1993. During 1994-1997, the line was purified and tested against the recommended variety HS-24. In 1998 and 1999, the smooth mesta strain were tested along with recommended cultivar HS-24. In 2000, the line was tested at two locations (JAES, Manikganj and Faridpur). The seeds were sown on 09.04.2000 at JAES and 05.04.2000 at Faridpur Regional station in RCBD with two replications. The plants were harvested at two times i.e. at 120 days after sowing and at 150 days after sowing. Fifteen plants were selected at random from each replication in one time of harvest and necessary data were taken.
