Characterization of Indigenous Tossa Jute (c. Olitorius) Germplasm Collected from Rajshahi, Khulna, Chittagong, and Dhaka Divisions for Yield Contributing Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka to characterize of fourteen accessions of indigenous tossa jute germplasm collected from different sources were sown on 16 April, 1995 in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession along with the check varieties O-9897 and O-4. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus descriptor. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight 3491, 3088, 2514, 2550 and 2563 performed better in the most of the cases than the control varieties.

Objectives:

To characterize some of indigenous tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius L.) germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka in 1995. Fourteen accessions of tossa jute germplasm collected from different sources along with check varieties O-9897 and O-4 were sown on 16 April, 1995. The materials under study were accession 3412, 2563, 3060, 3499, 3491, 2429, 3277, 2419, 2550, 3415, 3036, 2411, 2514 and 3088. The seeds were sown in 4 m long single row for each accession with three replications in Randomized Complete Block Design. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. Standard cultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data on stem colour, leaf colour, vain colour, petiole colour, stipule colour, bud colour, and fruit colour were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data on plant height, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight were collected. The data were analyzed following standard statistical procedures.

Achievement/Findings:
