Effect of Temperature on the Viability of Deshi Jute Seeds in Storage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during March to December in 1995 at Gene Bank Department to study the effect of temperature on the viability of deshi jute seeds conserved in BJRI Gene Bank. The seeds of CVL-1 with 5% moisture content and initial viability of 93% was divided into two lots. One lot was treated with Vitavax-200 (0.4%) and the other lot was untreated. The seeds were packed in aluminum foil pouches and sealed. The seed packets were stored in room temperature, +20⁰C, + 4⁰C and -20⁰C. The germination data were recorded at three months interval. It was observed that the untreated seed lot maintained 83% germination up to six months in room temperature. But it came down to 73% in case of seeds treated with Vitavax in the same period of time. The same trend of higher viability was observed in the untreated lot compared with the lot treated with Vitavax at +20⁰C, +4⁰C and -20⁰C.

Objectives:

Methodology:

100 seeds of each accession were studied for germination. The seeds of deshi jute variety CVL-1 were allowed to germinate in 4 replicated forms with 25 seeds in each petridish. The viability test was recorded for three days from the date of germination test. Germination percent was recorded as per recommended ISTA rules.

Achievement/Findings:

The germination data were recorded at three months interval. It was observed that the untreated seed lot maintained 83% germination up to six months in room temperature. But it came down to 73% in case of seeds treated with Vitavax in the same period of time. The same trend of higher viability was observed in the untreated lot compared with the lot treated with Vitavax at +20⁰C, +4⁰C and -20⁰C.
