Performance of T.aman and Boro Rice Under Double Transplanting as Influenced by Spacing at 2nd Planting and Age of First Planted Crop in Boro-fallow-t.aman Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur during Aman 2005 and Boro 2005-06. The design of experiment was a factorial RCB with three replications. Objective of the study was to compare the performance of double planted Aman and Boro rice with different spacing and age of first planted crop in Boro-fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern. The result indicates that the interaction of age of 1^st transplanted Boro crop and spacing of 2^nd transplanting was not significant. Significantly higher grain yields were obtained from 20 x 15 cm spacing (5.39 t/ha) and were reduced with increase or decrease in spacings from 20 x 15 cm and 45 days old 1^st crop transplanting in main field (5.23 t/ha) by splitting tillers.

Objectives:

To compare the performance of double planted Aman and Boro rice with different spacing and age of first planted crop in Boro-fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur during Aman 2005 and Boro 2005-06. The design of experiment was a factorial RCB with three replications. Three different ages of seedlings in 1^st transplanted crop were 40 days (A₁), 30 days (A₂) and 20 (A₃) days during T.Aman while these were 45 days (A₁), 35 days (A₂) and 25 (A₃) days in Boro season. Four spacings were 15x15 (S₁), 20x10 (S₂), 20x15 (S₃) and 20x20 (S₄). Twenty five and forty days old seedlings for T.Aman and Boro, respectively raised in a wet bed method were transplanted as treatment A₁, A₂ and A₃_..Twenty-five days old seedlings of BRRI dhan31 using 12-15 seedlings/hill were used during 1^st transplanting, at a spacing of 10 cm x 10 cm. Seed rate was 60 kg/ha. Irrigation was done to make the land saturated condition and pesticide was used when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

In T.Aman, irrespective of different spacing, all the yield contributing characters were statistically insignificant. Grain yield, panicles/m² and the number of grains per panicle were significantly affected by spacing. Twenty x 15 cm spacing produced significantly higher grain yield (3.79 t/ha) which was comparable to spacing 15 x 15 cm and 20 x 10 cm. The owest grain yield of 3.40 t/ha was obtained from a plot where seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 20 x 20 cm apart. The lower grain yield was attributed to lower number of panicles/m². In Boro grain yields were significantly affected by seedling ages. Treatments A₂and A3 (35 and 25 days at 1^st TP) produced significantly higher grain yields than treatment A1 (45 days). All other yield components were statistically identical. Regardless of seedling age, 15 x 15 cm spacing gave higher grain yield compared to other spacing. This difference was comparable with 20 x 10 and 20 x 15 cm spacing but significantly higher than that of 20 x 20 cm spacing. The higher grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m². The interaction effect was insignificant.
