Management of N Fertilizer for Zero Tilled Surface Seeding Boro Rice Using Drum Seeder in Medium Low Land Ecosystem

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Cultivation cost of rice is increasing day by day due to higher labour wages and higher prices of the inputs. Under this situation farmers need a technology that requires less cost. In this context, zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS) through use of drum seeder may be an alternative option as it does not require land preparation, raising and uprooting of seedlings and transplanting. The practice has been reported as an alternative crop establishment method in Bangladesh and elsewhere to enhance farmer’s income from rice cultivation by avoiding labour intensive transplanting technique (TP). Results showed that yields obtained ZTSS rice plot with three and four split application of N were statistically identical but significantly higher than that of traditional TP method with 3 splits of N application. Significantly higher panicle/m²was found in direct wet seeding over transplanting method. Four split application of N with wet seeding or LCC based N management increased grain yield and N use efficiency and provided additional output to the farmers.

Objectives:

To optimizing productivity of zero-tilled Boro rice

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in three dispersed farmers’ fields of Kapasia FSR&D site each farmer’s field was considered as one replication. The design of the experiment was RCB. The experiment consisted of two establishment method and three Nitrogen management techniques. Establishment methods were zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS) and transplanting (TP). Nitrogen management techniques in ZTSS were i) three equal splits application of N at 20, 40 and 85 days after sowing ii) four equal split application of N at 20, 40, 60 and 85 days after sowing and iii) LCC based N management. In TP method N was applied in 3 equal splits at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting. The crop variety was BRRI dhan29. Other management practices followed for the experiment are as per recommendation.

Yield and yield contributing characters of BRRI dhan29 were significantly affected by different crop establishment methods and N application techniques. The results showed that zero tilled surface seeded rice with LCC based N management technique produced significantly higher yield compared to other treatments. The higher yield was associated with higher number panicles per square meter. Yields obtained ZTSS rice plot with three and four split application of N were statistically identical but significantly higher than that of traditional TP method with 3 splits of N application. Significantly higher panicle/m²was found in direct wet seeding over transplanting method. The results indicated that four split application of N with wet seeding or LCC based N management increased grain yield and N use efficiency and provided additional output to the farmers. Zero tillage surface seeding (ZTSS) using drum seeder gave 1.3 ton higher yield per hectare and matured 8 to 12 days earlier than TP method. ZTSS gave higher gross margin than TP.
