Farmer Participatory Production Demonstration of Turmeric and Ginger in the Homestead

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Turmeric and ginger produced an average yield of 86 and 20 kg and gross margins of Tk. 672/- and Tk. 430/- from homestead area of 58 and 15.5 m², respectively.

Objectives:

To create awareness among farmers in growing turmeric and ginger in unutilized and or shady places of the homesteads and
To increase farm income by growing spices

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at FSR&D site, Moison block of Kapasia Upazila under Gazipur district during the period of May 02 to December, 2007 and May 28, 2007 to February, 2008 for turmeric and ginger, respectively. Turmeric and gingers were grown in five and four pieces of land of selected farmers, respectively. Prior to start the activities, the participatory farmers were imparted training on the production package of the spices. Both the spices were planted at a spacing of 50 x 25 cm apart using 2.5 and 2.0 tons seeds of turmeric and ginger/ha, respectively. BRRI scientists provided technical assistance to the farmers and all other cultural and management practices were done by the farmers. Crops were harvested at full maturity.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield and economics of turmeric showed that on an average yield of 86 kg with an average gross margin of Tk. 672 from a homestead area of 58m²were obtained from turmeric. Ginger gave an average yield 19.5 kg with an average gross margin of Tk.672 from 15.50m²area. Results indicate that the resource poor farmers can earn additional income by growing these two spices on land available around these farms.
