Cultivation of Lady's Finger in and Around the Homesteads

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Lady’s finger is one of the most popular summer vegetables of Bangladesh. Yellow mosaic virus is the severe limitation to the ladies finger cultivation. Farmers are cultivating traditional varieties of lady’s finger which are mostly affected by virus without following recommended practices. Newly introduced hybrid variety “Green Glory” has high yield potential and almost free of virus disease. So a development program was undertaken to popularize the variety with recommended practices for large-scale adoption. The yield ranged from 42 to 436 kg. The average cash value earned by each farmer was Tk. 1888 from the area of 147 m². It was seen that unutilized homestead area could contribute to improvement of the family income of the resource constrained farmers.

Objectives:

To popularize the variety with recommended practices for large-scale adoption.

Methodology:

The cultivation program of high yielding lady's finger was carried out at FSR&D site, Kapasia during kharif season 2008. Six farmers were supplied with improved hybrid “Green Glory” and the crop was fertilized @150-120-110-5000 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP and cow-dung respectively. Seeds were sown on 18 February, 2008. Intercultural operations and plant protection measures were taken as and when required. Crop was harvested during 15 April to 30 July 2008.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield of lady's finger grown by different farmers ranged from 42 to 436 kg with total return ranged from Tk. 504 to Tk. 5332. The result also indicates that the average cash value earned by each farmer was Tk. 1888 from the area of 147 m². It is seen that unutilized homestead area could contribute to improvement of the family income of the resource constrained farmers.
