Evaluation of Crop Management Options for Narrowing the Yield Gap in Boro and T.aman Rice in 2007-08.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia under Gazipur district during T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-08, respectively to determine the contribution of different crop production factors in narrowing the yield gap at farm level. Five management options: i) Farmer’s practice (FP), ii) FP + quality seed (Qs), iii) FP + Recommended fertilizer (RF), iv) FP + QS + RF and v) BRRI recommended management practices were evaluated in each dispersed farmer’s field in each season. BR11 in T. Aman, and BRRI dhan29 in Boro 2007-08 season produced 28 and 24% higher grain yields, respectively with BRRI recommended management practices than the farmers management practices in Kapasia area. In T. Aman and Boro seasons, farmers’ management practices combined with quality seeds and BRRI recommended fertilizer rate gave yield advantage of 13 and 17% compared to farmers’ management practices.

Objectives:

To determine the contribution of different crop production factors in narrowing the yield gap at farm level

Methodology:

The study was conducted at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia under Gazipur district in four and three dispersed farmers’ fields during T. Aman 2007 and Boro 2007-08, respectively. Each farmer’s field was considered as one replication. Five management options: i) Farmer’s practice (FP), ii) FP + quality seed (Qs), iii) FP + Recommended fertilizer (RF), iv) FP + QS + RF and v) BRRI recommended management practices were evaluated in each dispersed farmer’s field in each season. Under recommended practice, fertilizer rate for T. Aman and Boro season were 100,10,40,10,2 and 140,15,40,10,3 kg N,P,K,S,Zn/ha, respectively while these were 90-105,8-12,30-40,8-10,0 and 120-145,9-12,22-30,0,0 kg N,P,K,S,Zn/ha for farmers’ management practice. Recommended management practices adopted in this experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

In T. Aman season, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly affected by different management options. BRRI recommended management practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 28% higher than the farmers’ practice (3.47 t/ha). The result of the study reveals that an yield advantage of about 13% could be attained over farmers practice by using QS (quality seed) + RF (recommended fertilizer) while 8% and 3% yield advantage were attained by the use of recommended fertilizer and quality seeds separately, respectively along with farmers practice. In Boro season, BRRI recommended management practices produced significantly higher grain yield which was about 24% higher than the farmers management practice (5.92t/ha).The results of the study also imply that an yield advantage of 17% over farmers practice could be attained by integrating quality seeds and recommended fertilizer rate while 6 and 11% yield advantage was attained by the use of quality seeds and recommended fertilizer rate, respectively along with farmers management practice.
