The experiment was conducted in Rabi season 2006-07 with wheat at east byed, BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur to compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds and compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method.Five crop establishment options viz., T1-permanent beds with 100%  crop residue retention; T2-permanent beds with 50%  crop residue retention; T3- permanent beds without crop residue retention; T4- Semi permanent beds (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and T5-conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz. (W1)hand weeding and (W2)herbicide + hand weeding are being evaluating in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman rice cropping pattern. Mungbean performed significantly better on permanent beds with crop residue retention. Rice and wheat performance were significantly influenced by establishment methods. Comparable grain yields of rice were obtained from conventional flats and semi permanent beds without crop residue but significantly higher than that of permanent beds. The Rice equivalent yield (REY) of DS Rice-Wheat-Mungbean cropping pattern was significantly higher in flat (conventional) method than bed practices. Rice and wheat yields were significantly higher in conventional practice while mungbean performed significantly better in permanent beds. Benefit cost ratio was found better in bed practices due to less cost involvement in different management.

To compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds and compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method.

The experiment is a long-term experiment and commenced in Rabi season 2006-07 with wheat at east byed, BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur. Five crop establishment options viz., T1-permanent beds with 100%  crop residue retention ; T2-permanent beds with 50%  crop residue retention; T3- permanent beds without crop residue retention; T4- Semi permanent beds (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and T5-conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz. (W1) hand weeding and (W2) herbicide + hand weeding are being evaluating in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman rice cropping pattern. For the treatments with beds, 70 cm (40 cm top and 30 cm furrow) wide beds with 15 cm height were made. For the treatments with herbicide, non-selective herbicide Gramoxon was used in transition period between mungbean and rice and the transition period between wheat and mungbean. In Aman season ,DS (BRRI dhan39) rice was sown on 12 Aug,2007 and harvested on 12 Nov, 2007.After harvesting DS rice, wheat was sown on 4 Dec, 2007 and harvested on 24-30 March,2008.Again mungbean was sown on 1 April,2008  after wheat harvest. Mungbean was  harvested on 7-13 June, 2008 and was followed by DS rice.  Recommended management practices were followed for wheat, mungbean and rice cultivation. .

Weeding practice and interactions of weeding and establishment options did not influence grain yield of rice, wheat and mungbean. Mungbean performed significantly better on permanent beds with crop residue retention. Rice and wheat performance were significantly influenced by establishment methods. Comparable grain yields of rice were obtained from conventional flats and semi permanent beds without crop residue but significantly higher than that of permanent beds. Significantly higher grain yields of wheat were performed by conventional flats but identical to permanent beds with 100% wheat crop residue on beds. The Rice equivalent yield (REY) of DS rice-wheat-mungbean cropping pattern was significantly higher in flat (conventional) method (8.12) than bed practices. Though REY was higher in flat method than bed, BCR was found better in bed practices due to less cost involvement in different management.
