The study was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur during  T.Aman 2007and Boro 2007-08 seasons with different 7 treatments. Objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of double transplanted Aman and Boro rice with tillers of different ages of first planted crop and direct transplanting of aged seedlings on the same day in Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern and to determine optimum age of 1st planted crop in the  1st planted plot before uprooting. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. The result showed that in case of  late T.Aman, double transplanting on September 20 with tillers of 30 days aged crop of 1st transplanting with 25 days old seedlings produced maximum (4.56 t/ha) grain yield. During Boro, double transplanting on February 20 with tillers of 35 days aged crop of 1st transplanting with 40 days old seedling produced maximum (7.05 t/ha) grain yield.

The study was conducted at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur during  T.Aman 2007and Boro 2007-08 seasons. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. In T. Aman season the treatments were: T1- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 25-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 40-day old crop of 1st planting);T2- Transplanting with 65 days old seedlings;T3- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 25-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 30-day old crop of 1st planting);T4- Transplanting with 55 days old seedlings;T5- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 25-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 20-day old crop of 1st planting);T6- Transplanting with 45 days old seedlings; and T7- Delayed transplanting of 25 days old seedlings. In Boro, T1- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 40-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 45-day old crop of 1st planting);T2- Transplanting with 85 days old seedlings; T3- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 40-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 35-day old crop of 1st planting);T4- Transplanting with 75 days old seedlings;T5- Double transplanting (first transplanting of 40-day old seedlings & 2nd transplanting with tillers of 25-day old crop of 1st planting);T6- Transplanting with 65 days old seedlings; T7-Delayed transplanting of 40 days old seedlings were included. In T. Aman and Boro seasons the transplanting in main fields were done on 20 September 2007 and 20 February 2008, respectively. Seeding dates were synchronized according to treatments. BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan29 were grown in T. Aman and Boro season, respectively. In 1st transplanted plot, 12-15 seedlings/hill were planted at a spacing of 10x 10 cm. One third amount of recommended fertilizer was used in T.Aman and Boro seasons, respectively.

In T. Aman, grain yield, panicle number and filled grain per panicle were significantly different. Double transplanting with 30 (T3) days old crop of 1st transplanting gave maximum yield which was comparable  to tillers of 40 days old crop  of 1st transplanting (T1) but significantly higher than other treatments . Delayed transplanting with 25 days old seedlings gave significantly lowest grain yield (3.4 t/ha). Grain yield under traditional transplanting was found to improve with decreasing seedling age. Higher grain yield in double transplanted rice was closely associated with higher number of panicle per sq. m. and higher number of filled grains per panicle. The grain weight was not affected by DT and traditional transplanting. Grain yield, panicle number/m2 and filled grains/panicle were significantly different in Boro season. Significantly highest grain yield was obtained from DT (T3) with tillers of 35-day old crop of 1st transplanting (7.05 t/ha) followed by double transplanting (T1) with tillers of 45-day (6.3 t/ha) old crops of 1st transplanting which is comparable to T4 and T5 treatments.  Significantly lowest grain yield was observed from delayed transplanting of 45 days old seedlings. Probable reason to have higher grain yield in case of double transplanted rice was due to higher number of panicles/m2 and higher number of filled grains per panicle. Grain yield produced under traditional transplanting with 85 (T2), 75 (T4) and 65-day old seedlings (T6) were statistically identical but were significantly lower than those of double transplanting. It reveals from the results that in T. Aman, double transplanting with tillers of thirty (30) days aged seedling of 1st transplanting having 25 days in seedbed produced maximum (4.56 t/ha) grain yield while in Boro, double transplanting with tillers of thirty (35) days aged seedling of 1st transplanting remaining 40 days in seed bed produced maximum (7.05 t/ha) grain yield.
