Quality Improvement of Farmer's Stored Seeds of Mungbean, Lentil and Chickpea and Its Relation to Disease Development in Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seed samples of lentil, chickpea and mungbean were collected from individual farmer's stored house for seed quality analysis. Ninety (90) seed samples were collected from farmer's stored house of mentioned pulse growing area. Out of 90 samples each pulse crop consists of 30 seed samples for seed quality analysis. Most of them had high moisture, varied from 11.8% to 13.5% in lentil, while it was 13.4 to 13.9 for chickpea and 11.8 to 13.8 for mungbean. The highest percentage of germination was found 75.60%, 78% and 75% respectively for lentil, chickpea and mungbean. The highest percentage of healthy seeds of lentil, chickpea and mungbean was found with an average of in Ishurdi, Chapai and Barishal region respectively. Nine fungi species were detected from lentil seeds and seven from chickpea seeds and 8 from mungbean seeds through blotter incubation method. The fungi Aspergillus and Penicillium were dominated in lentil, chickpea and mungbean seeds. 21 batches of farmers and 9 batches of DAE staff training were conducted to increased farmer's knowledge as well as transfer the technology for quality pulses seed production. The percent insect infestation was recorded highest in Motka and lowest in plastic drum with neem leaves additives. The lowest percent mortality and disease severity was recorded for seed treated with provex-200 and healthy seed as well as highest seed yield (1750 kg/ha) in lentil at Magura and the highest yield (1560 kg/ha) for chickpea at Chapai region.

Objectives:

To determine the quality status of farmer stored mungbean, lentil and chickpea seeds. To improve the quality of farmers stored seeds of mungbean ,lentil and chickpea. To determine the seed health quality as affected by infection of the major pathogens. To develop sustainable technology for production and preservation of quality pulses seed through farmers participatory action research.

Methodology:

Experiments were conducted in the farmer's field at different location of Bangladesh. The laboratory experiments were conducted at Pulse research sub-station (PRSS), BARI, Gazipur. Twenty (20) batches of farmers and 9 batches of DAE staffs training were conducted before sowing of pulses. Baseline survey and farmers selection, seed collection from different location, seed quality analysis, seed health test were done for the experiment.
