Stability Analysis in Bread Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Stability parameters for yield and maturity of ten promising genotypes of wheat were studied at four locations. Results of the analysis revealed non- existence of genotype x environment interaction for yield. The g x e interaction was significant for days to maturity. For maturity, the lines Up 301/Son. 64-Pi62, Nacozari 76, Nacozari F 76 and Proter were identified as more stable than the rest.

Objectives:

To screen out wheat varieties adaptable to all over the country.

Methodology:

Under the expanded wheat research programme of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, an advanced yield trial with some promising genotypes was conducted under irrigated condition in soils viz. Grey terrace, Grey flood- plain, and Calcureous dark grey floodplain at Joydebpur, Jamalpur and Ishurdi as well as Jessore respectively in the year, 1978-79. The weather condition was favourable during the experimentation period. Genotypes included in the trials were 9 elite lines and one check variety (Sonalika). Seeds were sown in the month of November, 1978 at the rate of 110 kg/ha. The experiment at each location was fertilized with 100,60 and 40 kg of NPK/ha. Two-third of urea and full doses of triple super phosphate and muriate of potash were applied at the time of final land preparation and the rest of urea was applied as a top dress at the time of Ist irrigation. Irrigations were applied at crown root initiation, heading time and grain filling stages. Single weeding accompained with mulching was done after the top dressing Randomized block design with 4 replications was followed. The unit plot size was 5m x 4m. Observations on yield and maturity were recorded. Pooled analysis of variance was done as per the method suggested by Cochran and Cox (1957).

For maturity, the lines Up 301/Son. 64-Pi62, Nacozari 76, Nacozari F 76 and Proter were identified as more stable than the rest. In the present investigation only the genotypes V7,v9, V3, and V4 were found to satisfy the basic requirements of a comparatively stable variety.
