Effect of Time of Sowing on Some Important Characters of Ten Wheat Genotypes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten genotypes of wheat were sown in the months of October, November and December at the Regional Agricultunl Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna in 1979 with a view to finding out suitable genotypes for early, medium and late sowing. The results revealed that October and December sewings reduced the average growing period for all the genotypes in comparison to November sowing. The genotypes Jupateco 73, BAW-6, Bulbul sown in October; Bulbul, Nacozari 76, Kal-Bb, BAW-6, Inia-RL-4220x7C/Yr"s", Chiroca -s', Pavon 's' sown in November and Bulbul, Nacozari 76, Chiroca "s ", BAW -6, Pavon "s" sown in December gave better yields. Though BAW-6 and Bulbul performed well in three dates of planting in respect of yield, BAW-6 gave significantly highber yield in November planting. But in case of Bulbul there was significant difference in yield resulting from the three dates of planting.

Objectives:

To Identify wheat cultivars for early, optimum and late sewings.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications at the Regional Agricultural Research station, BARI, Ishurdi. The time of sowing was tried the main plots and the varieties in the sub-plots. The dates of sowing were October 31, November 22 and December 22. Entries included were Kal-Bb, Pavon "s", Bulbul, Nacozari 76, Cno "s"-Gallo x Bb- Ron, Inia-RL-4220 x 7C/Yr "s", Chiroca"s", BAW-6, Sonalika and Jupateco 73. The size of each unit plot was 4 m x 5 m. The land was fertilized with 100, 60,40 Kg's. of NPK/ha. Whole of phosphorus and potash and two-thirds of nitrogen were applied at the time at final land Preparation. The rest one- third of nitrogen was top dressed before first irrigation. The crop was irrigated thrice i.e. at 11,50 and 75 days after seeding. Two hand weedings were done during the vegetative stage. Observation on days to 50% heading, days to maturity, plant height, 1000-grain weight and yield per hectare were recorded.
