Variability and Interrelationships of Eight Quantitative Characters in Bread Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment with twenty two varieties/lines of wheat (T. aestivum L.) was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during 1985- 1986. Variability and interrelationships among eight agronomic traits were studied. All the characters showed significant variation. Number of ears/plant, grains/ear, and grain yield/plant showed a wide range of variation indicating the possibilities of selecting better genotypes. Moderate to high heritability with moderate genetic advance under selection was observed for days to heading, plant height, number of cars/plant.grains/ear and 1000 grain weight. Grain yield/plant correlated positively with number of ears/plant, ear length, grains/ear and 1000 grain weight but the association of this trait with days to heading and days to maturity was negative. Days to heading showed negative correlation with 1000 grain weight indicating the importance of heading to maturity period for larger grain size. Number of ears/plant correlated positively with days to maturity and ear length but negatively with number of grains/ear. The correlation between ear length and grains/ear was very high and positive.

Objectives:

(i) To the component of variation, heritability and genetic advance under selection.

(ii) To the correlation among various traits at genotypic and phenotypic levels.

Methodology:

In the winter of 1985-1986, twenty two varieties/lines of bread wheat were grown in a randomized complete block design with four replications at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna. The unit plot constituted of double rows of 2.5 cm length and plants were spaced at 30 cm within the rows. The experiment was set on December 2,1985. The seeds were sown continuously in rows. After complete emergence 2.5 cm space between plants was maintained within the rows by thinning. Recommended package of practices were followed for raising the crop. Ten plants from each plot were taken at random for recording data on of plant height, ears/plant, ear length, grains/ear, 1000 grain weight and grain yield/plant. Data on days to heading and days to maturity were recorded on whole plot basis and plot means were subjected to statistical analysis. Genotypic and phenotypic variance and their coefficients of variation were determined according to Burton (1952). The genotypic variation in terms of percentage of total variation was used to estimate broad sense heritability. Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients were computed for each pair of characters from analysis of variance and covariance.
