Inbreeding Depression in Radish (raphanus Sativus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted during winter season of 1993-94 with three inbred generations of ten radish varieties to estimate the extent of inbreeding depression. Results indicated that inbreeding delayed days to root harvest and decreased root volume. All the varieties except Red Mollika showed different levels of inbreeding depression. The highest depression (19.49 per cent) was observed in the self incompatible variety, Kuni White. The depression was higher in I₀-I₂ than I₀-I₁ for all the characters under study. However, the mean depression in I₁-I₂ was lower than that of I₀- I₁Root and seed weight per plant exhibited 18.41 and 24.73 per cent depression, respectively, after two generations of selfing.

Objectives:

To estimate the effects of inbreeding in ten local varieties of radish.

Methodology:

Ten promising open pollinated radish varieties viz. Tangail Local, Red Mollika, Indian Aushi, Red Bongi, Red Kalpin, Aushi, Kuni White, Kuni, Pinky and Tasaki were grown at the experimental farm of the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Salna, Gazipur during winter season of 1991-92. Some plants in each variety were selfed in II generation by bud pollination and geitonogamic pollination. In bud pollination, mature pollen was applied to immature non receptive stigma, generally 1-2 days prior to the flowers. In geitonogamical pollination, freshly opened flowers of the earlier emasculated buds were cross pollinated by the pollen from the flowers of the same plant bagged previously. For each form of selfing, a number of branches in each selected plant were utilized. A part of II seeds were advanced to 12 generation by the selfing methods as above during winter 1992-93. The seeds of two inbred generations (I_I and 1₂) and the original population (I₀) were sown on November 12 1993 in a trireplicated randomized complete block design at the experimental farm of IPSA. Each experimental plot consisted of two-rows of 5 m length. The row spacing was 50 cm, having 30 cm plant spacing. Ten competitive plants from each treatment were sampled randomly and data were recorded thereon for seven characters, including root and seed weight. Inbreeding depression of the various inbred generations were estimated for all the seven characters studied.

It can be concluded that propagation by selfing of some local radish varieties is possible as they induce little or no inbreeding depression. After two generations of inbreeding, these varieties still showed good growth vigor, indicating presence of weak incompatibility mechanism.
