The experiment was conducted with 20 piglets (6.93 ±0.76 kg live weight) aged 2 months in farmer's house under Jalchatra and Pirgacha Mission, at Madhupur upzilla under Tangail district to determine the appropriate concentrate supplement dosages needed for pig/piglet fattening and also to study the economics of the practice. Piglets were categorized into 5 treatments each with four replications. Control group received only traditional feed and treated group received supplement doses at the rare of 1%,2%, 3% & 5% of live body weight of TI, T2, T3 and T4 respectively. The average live weight (kg) at the end of the experiment were 82.08±1.12, 75.02±9.11, 63.84±2.97, 45.92±6.95 and 25.36±12.04 for the pigs of T4, T3, T2, TI and T5, respectively and there was significant statistical difference between treatments (P< 0.01). It was also found that Food Conversion Efficiency (FCE) of the pigs of TI (0.35) and T2 (0.32) were significantly (P< 0.01) higher than that of the other treatment. The highest cost profit ratio was obtained in TI (1.11) where as the lowest was in T4 (-0.05). But the highest profit in cash was found in T2 (1854.46 Tk/pig) which is 127.90/0 higher than the 2nd highest net profit (TI). Therefore it can be concluded that pig fed with concentrate mixture (@ 2% of the body weight) for 6 months was economically more profitable than the pig rearing in traditional way with no concentrated feed.

To determine the appropriate concentrate supplement dosages needed for pig fattening and also to study the economics of concentrate supplement feeding.

The experiment was conducted in farmer's farm under Jalchatra and Pirgacha Mission, in Madhupur, Tangail for a period of six months from 21st March to 17th September 2005 (where total 20 farmers from two mission were involved). The twenty pigs aged 2 months were purchased from Gabtoly market of Muktagacha, Mymensingh. Average initial body weight per pig was 6.93 ±0.76 kg. Before starting the experiment each piglet received de-worming medicine. The trial was designed in RCBD method. There were five different concentrate mixture treatments and each treatment had four replications in the trial.

The treatments were as follows -

T1 = Concentrate mixture 1% of the body weight +traditional feed adlibitum. T2 = Concentrate mixture 2% of the body weight +traditional feed adlibitum.   T3 = Concentrate mixture 3% of the body weight +traditional feed adlibitum. T4 = Concentrate mixture 5% of the body weight +traditional feed adlibitum. T5 = Control=fed traditional feed adlibitum without concentrate mixture.

Supplement dosages of concentrate mixture were formulated using commonly available ingredients such as rice polish (30%), maize (20%), wheat bran (25%), defatted soybean meal (23%), oyster shell (1%), and common salt (1%). One gm vitamin mineral premix was also mixed with one kg of mixed feed. All the treatments except T5, were given. concentrate mixture according to their body weight which was measured at 15 days interval. In addition to the concentrate mixture traditional feed (left over cooked rice, vater maar, moder saba, kitchen wastages) were given adlibitum. Control group only received the traditional feed.

The crude Protein (CP) content of concentrate mixture was 21.58%, whereas 6.55% and 0.43% CP was found in rice polish and traditional feed (A mixture of wastage of cooked rice, moder saba, kitchen wastage) respectively. But it was difficult to analyze the Metabolic Energy because the DLS (Department of livestock service)have no facilities to analyze ME to we done in manually.

The present study showed that the pig fattening with concentrate mixture was more profitable than pig reared only with traditional feed. With increased feed quality black pig can reach 60 kg live weight within 6 months. Therefore it can be concluded that pig fed with a concentrate mixture (@ 2% of the body weight for 6 months was economically more profitable than the traditional pig rearing with no concentrate feed.
