Effects of Gamma-irradiation in Mungbean [vigna Radiata (l.) Wilczek]

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seeds of five mung bean genotypes were irradiated with 20, 30, 40 and 50 kR gamma rays with a view to create desirable genetic variability. The response of gamma rays was observed by studying germination and survival percentage, plant height, branches per plant, 100 seed weight and grain yield per plant. The results showed that the germination and survival percentage and plant height were negatively correlated with the increase in doses of gamma rays in all genotypes. The branches per plant was reduced due to gamma-irradiation except the genotype Kanti and 312. Hundred seed weight was positively influenced in all genotypes. Yield per plant was reduced with ail doses as compared to the control. Kanti showed positive and the other genotypes showed negative responses for yield per plant. The genotype Mosk-I was found to be more sensitive to gamma radiation than other genotypes. The results indicated that a wide variation was observed in the irradiated populations in all characters but maximum variation was found at 40 and 50 kR treatments as compared to the control in ail the genotypes.

Objectives:

To determine the response of different genotypes of mungbean to different doses of gamma rays for the induction of genetic variability.

Methodology:

Sun dry seeds of two released vaneues (Kanti and Mubarik) and three advanced line (Mosk-L, M-19 and 312) of mungbean were treated with 20, 30, 40 and 50 kR exposure of gamma radiation from the ⁶⁰Co source at the Institute of Food and Radiation Biology, Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Savar, Dhaka. Three hundred seeds of each treatment along with controls of each genotype were hand dibbled in the field using a randomized complete block design having three replications. The row to row and plant to plant distances were 30 cm and 15 cm, respectively. No fertilizer and plant protection measures were applied to the experimental crop. Mulching and weeding were done as and when necessary. After twelve days of sowing, germination percentage and at maturity survival percentage were recorded for each treatment of all genotypes. At flowering stage, fifteen plants in each treatment from each replication of all genotypes were tagged randomly. The randomly selected M₁ plants were harvested separately for recording data on plant height, number of branches per plant, 100 seed weight and grain yield per plant. Data thus collected were analysed statistically and their means were compared using Tukey's W -Test.

From the results, a wide variation was observed in the irradiated populations in all characters in all the genotypes but maximum variation was found at 40 and 50 kR doses as compared to the control. Shaikh et al. (1980) also reported that 40 to 50 kR doses of gamma rays are suitable for mutation breeding in mungbean and blackgram. Sarwar et al. (1986) suggested that for creating genetic variability in mungbean to a positive direction and to select better ideotypes from the succeeding generations, medium doses (20-40 kR) may be used safely.
