Study of the Seasonal and Polluting Effects on the Physical and Chemical Limnology of the Coastal River Muhuri

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted in the river Muhuri with a view to identify and delineate seasonal and deleterious effect of physico- chemical and biochemical parameters on the water quality and river ecosystem. Fourteen physico- chemical variables such as temperature, transparency, total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), hydrogen-ion-concentration (pH), redox potential (Eh), electrical conductivity (EC), total alkalinity, chloride, nitrite, phosphate, dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) have been analyzed for water samples collected in dry and wet season from the river located along the coastal bell which is being affected by agricultural activities, domestic wastes and other manmade and seasonal influences. The results indicated that pollution sources affecting the physical and chemical limnology of the river water and seasonal sources have been significantly differentiated (at <0.05 level by DMRT). The critical scrutiny and appraisal of the relevant data infer that the water of the river Muhuri, which necessitates effective and efficient water management for the safe aquatic environment as well as human health.

Objectives:

To study the seasonal and polluting effects on the physical and chemical limnology of the coastal river Muhuri.

Methodology:

Water samples were collected from the site in between Haripur to Dhumghat area where river flows through the plain lands covering agricultural fields and densely populated area of Feni district. As a great influence of climatic changes on environment and as well as to determine the seasonal variation, sampling were done at each under site during dry season (November-March) and wet season (May-September). Sampling was carried out seasonally during low tide. Sub-surface water samples were collected from the selected areas of the concerned river using UWITEC water sampler (Model A-53, Umwelt und Wissenschafttechnik, Neiderreiter, Richard jun, Germany). Then all water samples were kept in clean plastic containers but for Dissolved Oxygen (DO) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), water samples were collected in BOD bottles of 300 mL capacity. Preservation procedure varies depending on the test performed. For the determination of DO, water samples collected in BOD bottles were treated with 2 mL of manganese sulfate solution (MnSO₄, 4H₂O) followed by 2 mL of alkali-iodide azide reagent in the field. The bottles were then turned upside down for several times to allow thorough mixing of the contents. The bottles were sealed with stoppers in such a way so that no air bubble was left (APHA, 1976). To determine the nitrite and phosphate, water samples were preserved in 250 mL glass bottle. To stop the conversion of nitrite to either nitrate or ammonia by microbial action, the sample was temporarily preserved with 4 mL of concentrated H₂SO₄, and for phosphate determination, 1.25 mL of chloroform was added into the sample to reduce the microbial activities (APHA, 1976). All the bottles with samples were then placed in wooden boxes to avoid direct sunlight and thus the samples were transported to laboratory and were kept in the refrigerator (except BOD samples) at 4°C till the analysis was done. The analytical procedure described in the APHA (1976) was followed in this study.
