Vernalization Effect on Flower Induction in Exotic Radish

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to find the optimum vernalization period for flower induction in exotic radish. The treatment comprised four cultivars (Ogura radish and its Maintainer. Korean White and Pinky) and five vernalization periods (0. 1, 2. 3 and 4 weeks at 51: temperature). Results indicated that both the cultivar and vernalization period had significant effects on flower induction and seed setting. Of the cultivars, Pinky had the lowest number of days for flower induction and it also returned the highest seed yield per plant. Vernalization of radish seedlings at 5^oC for four weeks induced early flowering and maturity and more number of pods per plant, seed number per pod and seed yield per plant.

Objectives:

To find the optimum vernalization period for flower induction in the "Ogura radish" and other exotic radish cultivars under Bangladesh conditions in order to transfer the male sterility mechanism to local cultivars.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA), Salna , Gazipur , Bangladesh during the winter of 1991-92 and 1992-93. Four radish cultivars were used in this study. These were the "Ogura radish" and its "Maintainer" (from Japan), "Korean White" (from Korea) and "Pinky" (from Bangladesh). Seeds of each cultivar were sown in vermiculite on October 10, 1991 and October 5, 1992. Pots containing sprouted seeds were transferred to growth chambers for vernalization. The seedlings were vernalized at 5°C for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks with 16 hours light and 8 hours dark per day. Vernalized seedlings were hardened under shade for two days and then pairs of seedlings were transplanted in individual earthen pots. The seedlings were allowed to grow under natural conditions using standard agronomic practices. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design with four replications. Five plants were randomly selected in order to record days to flowering, days to pod maturity, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight (g) and seed yield per plant (g). Achievement/Findings:

From the results, it may be concluded that flower induction of exotic radish cultivars is possible using appropriate vernalization treatments of seedlings and can be utilized in crossing programs to transfer desirable characteristics to local cultivars. The local cultivar "Pinky" responded more to vernalization treatment than did exotic cultivars. Vernalization of radish seedlings at 5°C for four weeks is optimal for flower induction and seed yield in this plateau region of Gazipur in Bangladesh.
