Hardseededness of mungbean was observed in fresh seeds of hundred mungbean genotypes. Mungbean genotypes were collected from the Department of Agronomy and grown in the field. Freshly harvested seeds were preserved in medium term storage for laboratory and filed test. Mungbean genotypes varied greatly by seed size, seed coat thickness, imbibition, hard seed content, germination and stand establishment in the field. Seed size of mungbean genotypes differed from 20 to 75 mg where the genotype ACC-12810006 was the smallest and VC-6368(46-7-2) was the bolder ones. Seed coat thickness of mungbean genotypes ranged from 0.03 to 0.33mm which indicated 90.9% difference in seed coat thickness. Pattern of imbibition was determined by weight increase after imbibition and it was found that weight of mungbean seeds increased from 75 to 135% depending upon the degree upon the thickness. The magnitude of hardseededness in mungbean related to seed coat thickness and the genotype GK-62 with thickest seed coat showed the highest proportion (50%) of hard seeds. A large number of genotypes contained intermediate proportion of hard seeds where very few genotypes had no hard seeds. Germination and stand establishment of mungbean were almost resembled to that of hard seed content where it varied from 35 to 90% in germination and 20 to 70% in stand establishment under field condition.

The experiment was conducted at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University with hundred mungbean genotypes. The mungbean genotypes were

Seeds of mungbean genotypes were collected from the Department of Agronomy and grown in the field. Freshly harvested seeds were preserved in medium term storage for different laboratory tests as well as for field test to observe the stand establishment in the field. Laboratory experiment was conducted at the Seed Science and Technology Unit during July to November, 2009 and field experiment during March, 2010.

This study revealed that fresh seed of mungbean genotypes contained hard seeds at variable degrees because of either variable seed coat thickness or seed coat structure. Therefore, the genotypes which contained a large fraction of hard seeds should not be used for sowing immediately after harvest. If needed, hardseededness should be breakdown. However, hardseededness of mungbean can be used to our advantage in harvesting mungbean in rainy season and in storing for a longer period without affecting the seed quality.
