Genetic Analysis in Radish (raphanus Sativus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A 7x7 diallel cross of radish (Raphanus sativus L.) suggested the importance of dominance for root volume, root weight per plant, plant weight and leaf length. The root weight per plant was observed to be controlled by three pairs of genes. Highest heritability (44%) was observed for days to root harvest, idicating probability of selection in early generations. The asymmetrical distribution of the positive and negative alleles at all loci was found for most of the characters. The graphical analysis indicated wide genetic diversity among the parents.

Objectives:

To Investigate the genetic architecture of different root and plant characters in radish.

Methodology:

Seven important local radish varieties viz. Tangail Local, Red Bongi, Kuni, Red Kalpin, Aushi, Tasaki and Pinky were crossed in all possible combinations and 21 F1's (excluding reciprocals) were produced. Probable origin and observed morphological features of these varieties were summarized. The parents and their F1 hybrids were grown at the experimental farm of IPSA, Salna, Gazipur, during winter 1992-93. A trireplicated randomized complete block design was followed. A single row of 5m each constituded the experimental plot. The row spacing was 50cm having plant spacing 30cm within rows. Data were recorded from ten randomly selected competitive plants from each plot for days to root harvest, root length, root diameter, root volume, root weight, plant weight, leaves per plant, leaf length and leaf breadth. The data were analyzed for variance, genetic components of variation and Vr-Wr graphs.

Achievement/Findings:

It is observed from the graphical and the component of variance analysis that dominance effect was involved for all the characters under study except days to root harvest. Therefore, it is concluded that heterosis breeding would be prospective for radish to bring out the desired improvement for different root and leaf characters.
