Development of Short Duration Mungbean Genotypes for Crop Intensification in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments was carried out at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University to development short duration and high yielding mungbean variety suitable for cereal based cropping system Twenty seven mungbean genotypes were evaluated and data on phenology, plant height, pods per plant, seeds per pod, seed size and yield were assessed. The results revealed that two genotypes (GK-24 and GK-63) showed earliness (44 days) and one was late (56 days) in maturity. The results were reversed in plant height where tallest plant was observed in late genotype and shortest in early genotypes. The number of pods per plant varied from 9.06 to 24.4, seeds per pod 9.70 to 12.46, seed size 23.9 to 81.57 mg and seed yield 10.69 to 31.57 g per plant over the mungbean genotypes. The genotype VC-6173C produced the boldest seed while the highest yield was found in VC-3960(A-88). As higher seed yield, bolder seed and maturity duration was observed in different genotypes, these valuable traits may be utilized in future breeding program for yield improvement, crop intensification and value addition in mungbean use.

Objectives:

The study was undertaken to evaluate mungbean genotypes for the development of short duration, high yielding variety for cereal based cropping system so that cropping intensity and crop productivity can be increased.

Methodology:

Field experiment was carried out at the experimental farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Gazipur with 27 mungbean genotypes. Seeds of the genotypes were multiplied in Kharif II season of 2011 and experiment was established in Kharif I season of 2012. The mungbean genotypes used in this experiments were Acc1281006, Acc12840014, Acc12890078, Acc12890102, Acc12910112, Acc12890053, Acc12890055, GK24, GK27, GK43, GK49, GK63, ML-613, VC3960(A-88), VC6144C, VC6148(50-12), VC6171-93, VC6173C, VC6368(46-40-4), VC6960-88, Vo1304A-G, Vo1372A-G, Vo1396B-G, Vo1570B-G, IPSA3, IPSA5 and IPSA12. Each genotype were grown in one line 4 m long row in 30 cm apart with an interplant spacing of 10 cm. The crop was managed properly with appropriate dose of fertilizer and other cultural practices. Data recorded on days to first flowering, days to maturity, pods plant^-1, seeds pod^-1, 1000 seed weight, grain yield and resistance to MYMV.

Achievement/Findings:

The results indicated great variability in phenology, yield attributes and seed yield of mungbean genotypes. Among the genotypes, two showed earliness (44 days) and one showed late (56 days) in maturity. One genotype produced bolder seed (81.57 mg) while the genotype VC-3960(A-88) were found superior in producing seed yield. As higher seed yield, bolder seed and maturity duration was observed in different genotypes, these valuable traits may be utilized in future breeding program for yield improvement, crop intensification and value addition in mungbean use.
