In order to evaluate the variability among vegetable amaranth genotypes and its nutritive profile this experiments were conducted. The study revealed that high heritability coupled with high genetic advance and genetic advance in percent of mean, nine traits viz., Fe, Zn, Mn, Ni, Ascorbic acid, plant height, stem base diameter, leaves/plant and foliage yield would be selected for the improvement of 25 vegetable amaranth strains under study. However, correlation study revealed that strong positive association of Fe, Mn, Ascorbic acid, plant height, stem base diameter, and leaves/plant with foliage yield.  Selection based on Fe, Mn, Ascorbic acid plant height, stem base diameter, and leaves/plant could lead to increase the foliage yield of vegetable amaranth strains. Path coefficient revealed that Fe, Mn, plant height, leaves/plant and stem base diameter had high direct effect with significant genotypic correlation indicating direct selection of these traits would be effective for improvement of foliage yield of vegetable amaranth strains. Based on mean, genetic parameters and correlation coefficient values and Path coefficient values, four vegetable amaranth strains viz., A3, A10, A19 and A24 might be selected as high vitamin and mineral containing high yielding vegetable amaranth varieties.

To ascertain the vitamin and mineral composition of different strains of vegetable amaranth, To find out the variability among vegetable amaranth genotypes, To assesses the parameters that improve the foliage quality.

Vegetable amaranth germplasm collected from different eco-geographical regions of Bangladesh, used in this experiment, Promising strains of amaranth were grown in a randomized block design with three replications at the experimental field of department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, BSMRAU, Gazipur.  The plot size for each treatment was 2 m2 with row-to-row and plant-to-plant distance of 20 cm and 5 cm, respectively. Recommended fertilizer dose, appropriate cultural practices was maintained.  Data were collected at 30 days old. The data were recorded on 10 randomly selected plants in each replication for plant height (cm), leaves/plant and stem diameter (cm). Foliage yield/plot (kg) was harvested as whole plot basis. Beside this, two leaf quality traits viz. carotenoid (mg/g), ascorbic acid (mg/100 gm) and mineral composition traits viz.  K (g/100 g), Ca (g/100 g) Mg (g/100 g), Mn (mg/kg), zinc, iron, and nickel were estimated. All data obtained from each trait were statistically analyzed. The analysis of variance was done according to Goulden’s methods (1959). Genotypic coefficient of variation was computed using the formula suggested by Burton (1952). Heritability in broad sense and genetic advance was calculated according to the methods given by Allard (1960). Correlation coefficient was analyzed following Hayes et al. (1955). Path coefficient analysis was calculated according to the formula given by Dewey and Lu (1959).
