The experiment was conducted to study the ectoparasiticidal efficacy of ivermectin and biskatali in calves on the basis of lice and tick count in a selected area (20 square cm) on the abdomen. Ivermectin (pour on formulation) showed efficacy 100% and 2% biskatali spray showed 100% efficacy. Similarly body weight was also significantly increased (p < 0.05) following treatment of ivermectin and biskatali. The hematological parameters i.e. TEC, Hb and PCV were also increased significantly (p < 0.01) after treatment with ivermectin and biskatali. On the other hand, ESR value were decreased significantly (p < 0.01). Because of local availability and biskatali may be used as ectoparasiticidal in our country.

  1. To study the efficacy of Ivermectin (pour on formulation) and biskatali against ectoparasites (Ticks and Lice) in calves,
  2. To study the effect of Ivermectin (pour on formulation) and biskatali on body weight in calves, and
  3. To study the effect of Ivermectin (pour on formulation) and biskatali on certain blood parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV and ESR) in calves.

The experiment was conducted in the CLDDP of Grameen Fisheries and Livestock foundation in Sirajganj in collaboration with department of Pharmacology, Parasitology and Physiology. Fifteen calves were selected from that selected area on the basis of severity of infestation and randomly divided into 3 groups each group containing (5 calves). Among them Group A was kept as infected control group, group B was treated with ivermectin (Pour on formulation) at the dose rate of 500 µg/kg body weight and group C were treated with biskatali 2% spray. After treatment all calves control and treated groups were closely observed for 28 days and various parameters such as clinical parameter (no. of tick and lice and body weight) and hematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV and ESR) were studied. The severity of infestation of ectoparasites (ticks and lice) was observed by counting the number of ectoparasites in a selected area of the individual calf. The ectoparasites were detected by visual examination of the calf and the number of parasites was recorded. The procedure of examination was to count the ectoparasites (ticks and lice) of abdominal region within an area of 5cm x 4cm (20 square em). The selected 20 square cm were marked with a permanent colour and the ticks and lice within this area were counted at pre-treatment (0 day) and post-treatment (7th, 14th, 21st, 28th) period. To detect the effects of the two drugs on this parameter body weight of each calf under experiment was taken before treatment (day '0') and 28 days after treatment by the help of measuring balance. Blood samples were collected from Jugular vein of the calves of treated and control group in vials containing anticoagulant (Sodium Citrate 3.8%) at day 0, 7, 14, 21, 28 of treatment period and the effects of ivermectin on the various hematological parameters (TEC, Hb, PCV and ESR) were determined as per method described by Coffin (1955). The data were analyzed statistically between control and treated groups by using unpaired student's test.

In the present study, topical application of ivermectin was 88.22% and 80.47% effective against lice infection and tick infection respectively in calves. This result is in conformity with the earlier workers (Rehbein et al., 1997; Yazwinski et al., 1997). Some other workers found more than 99% efficacy of ivermectin (Gogolewski et al., 1997). In this study biskatali shown 75% and 71.97% effectiveness against lice infection and tick infection respectively. This compound presents among other properties, insect antifeedant, repellency effect and botanical insecticide (Amin et al., 2000). In the present study, significantly (p < 0.01) increased in TEC, Hb and PCV were observed in the treated group of calves and this might be due to expulsion of blood sucking ectoparasites from the body. The significantly (p < 0.01) reduction in the sedimentation rate of erythrocytes in successfully treated group was observed and this may be due to recovery from inflammation in ectoparasite, which was produced by ectoparasites. By judging available literature except Anil-Kumar and Joshi (1992), no information traced about the changes of Hb, PCV and ESR in the ivermectin and biskatali treated group. Anil-Kumar and Joshi (1992) found increase on Hb gm% level in ivermectin treated calves.
