Utilization of Non-conventional Feedstuff of Plant Origin as Dietary Protein Source in Formulated Feeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An 8 week feeding trial was conducted in a static indoor rearing system to evaluate the suitability of locally available plant leaves, vegetables and aquatic plants as partial substitutes for dietary fish meal protein for Rohu, Labeo rohita (4.12±0.01 g). Seven experimental iso-nitrogenous (30% protein) and iso-energetic 18 kJ/g GE diets were formulated to contain 15% of the total dietary protein as plant protein using azolla, duck-weed, cabbage leaf, radish leaf, helencha, pui and equal mixture of duck-weed, cabbage leaf and radish leaf balanced by protein from fish meal. The inclusion level in the experimental diets for azolla, duck-weed, cabbage leaf, radish leaf, helencha, pui and the mixture were 19, 28, 24, 20, 20 and 25% respectively. One control diet (30% protein) was prepared with fish meal as the sole source of protein. Each experimental and control diet were fed the fish to duplicate groups of 30 fish (per tank). Fish fed diet containing helencha showed better performance followed by cabbage leaf, duck-weed, azolla and radish leaf with no significant differences with the control diet. The lowest growth performance was observed diet containing with pui followed by a mixture of three plant protein sources.

Objectives:

1).To evaluate the utilization of locally available plant leaves, vegetables and aquatic plants as dietary protein sources in formulated fish feeds; 2). to analyze the economic feasibility of fish production by introducing locally available plant leaves, vegetables and aquatic plants as fish feed; and 3). to determine the nutrient quality of marketed/available fish feed ingredients and commercial fish/shrimp feeds in the country.

Methodology:

Selected locally available fresh non-conventional feedstuff of plant origin i.e., plant leaves vegetable and aquatic plants were collected and processed. The biochemical analyses to determine content of moisture, crude protein, total lipid, crude fibre and ash of fishmeal and selected locally available dried plant leaves (Helencha, Enhydra fluetuans; Banana leaf, Musa sapientum), dried vegetables (Cabbage, Brassia oleraoca; Cauliflower leaf, Bassica deracca; Radish leaf, Raphanus sativas, Kalmi and potato) and dried aquatic plants (duckweed, Lamna sp. and Azolla pinnata), experimental feeds, fish carcass were done by the methods as given in AOAC (1990).

Achievement/Findings:

Nutritional quality of locally available indigenous ingredients i.e. plant leaves, vegetables and aquatic floating plants as supplemental fish feed will be known; the potentiality of indigenous fish feed ingredients especially plants leaves, vegetables and aquatic plants in dried from as partial substitute of costly dietary fish meal protein will be identified; low cost feeds will be developed with locally available plants leaves, vegetables and aquatic plants for fish culture system in ponds; and nutrient quality of marketed/ available fish feed ingredients and commercial fish/shrimp feeds in the country will be known.
