Coorrdinated Regional Project on Production and Dissemination of Improved Carp Breeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted in selected nursery ponds with an area of 15-25 decimal at Gouripur, Mymensingh and Modhupur, Tangail. After pond preparation, spawn of common carp from BFRI and private hatchery were stocked in the selected ponds at the stocking density of 50g/decimal in both the selected areas. Feeding and fertilization was followed as per design of the project and growth evaluation of primary and secondary nursing was conducted for the period of 40 and 45 days respectively.

Objectives:

To collect of improved/wild germplasm of carp species from lead center of BFRI/DoF/natural breeding grounds; To evaluat of growth performance of improved, wild and private hatchery produced seeds; dissemination of improved breeds to the private hatcheries/nurseries/farmers; and training of the stakeholders.

Methodology:

To produce improved quality carp seeds and comparative growth trials between improved, wild and hatchery produced seeds, two satellite nurseries (in Mymensingh and in Tangail district) were selected with consultation of DOF officials. For the primary nursing of spawns, 8 ponds (two ponds for each species) each with an area of 10-25 decimal were stocked with improved carps spawn from BFRI-FS hatchery and wild/private hatchery, whenever first spawns will be available. All the ponds were prepared following the procedure of drying, liming and manuring etc. The spawn were fed @10-20% body weight/day in morning and evening with commercially available (a mixture of fishmeal 20% + mustard oil cake 20% + meat and bone meal 10% + rice bran 35% + wheat flour 14% + vitamin premix 1%, having 30% protein) diets for 7 days a week. The spawn attained 0.5-1 inches size after 4-5 weeks of nursing and later secondary nursing was conducted in ponds with an area @5000 fry/decimal for 4-8 weeks of nursing.

Achievement/Findings:

The successful completion of the project may help to establish a better technique to produce good quality fingerlings of carp for the nursery operators and supply to the fish farmers which will ultimately increase fish production as a whole. It is expecting that the generated technology on carp nursery management might be useful to the aquaculture industry and for those are involved in fish growing. Development of carp nursery system in rural areas will meet the demand of good quality seed for grow-out farmers for stocking in due time and it will also create employment opportunity for rural unemployed youth and women/housewives.
