Farmers’ Participatory Production of Quality Seeds of Recently Released BRRI Varieties for Boro and T. Aman Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Extensive field visits at Farming systems Research and Development site Kapasia indicates that majority of the farmers use paddy seeds from their own stock. Usually they do not take special care for producing quality seeds. As a result they are not obtaining yield advantage of modern rice varieties. To provide good quality seeds and also to expedite the delivery systems of good quality seeds among the rice growing farmers, this study was implemented. In T.Aman season maximum portion of produced seeds of BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan39 were consumed by the farmers, respectively. But in case of BRRI dhan31, the highest portion of the seeds was sold as paddy because of its fineness and higher market price. Seeds of these above mentioned varieties were exchanged to 30 neighboring farmers. Seeds of BRRI dhan39 were neither used by the farmers as own seeds nor sold to the market nor exchanged among the neighboring farmers because of its poor quality. In Boro season, most of the produced was consumed by the families as paddy and a small portion was exchanged among the farmers.

Objectives:

To expedite the delivery systems of good quality seeds among the farm community

Methodology:

To provide good quality seeds and also to expedite the delivery systems of good quality seeds among the rice growing farmers, a study was undertaken at Farming systems Research and Development site in Raniganj, Raunut and Utterkhamer blocks of Kapasia upazila under Gazipur district. Seeds of lately released BRRI varieties, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan34 and BRRI dhan39 in T.Aman season and BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 in Boro season were distributed among twelve farmers. Five kilogram seeds of each variety were provided to each farmer. Prior to start the study, participating farmers were imparted training on quality seed production technologies and advised them to follow the recommended management practices.

Achievement/Findings:

In T.Aman season about 93, 94 and 91% of the produced seeds of BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31 and BRRI dhan39 were consumed by the farmers, respectively. But in case of BRRI dhan31, the highest portion (55%) of the seeds was sold as paddy because of its fineness and higher market price. Seeds of these above mentioned varieties were exchanged to 30 neighboring farmers. Seeds of BRRI dhan39 were neither used by the farmers as own seeds nor sold to the market nor exchanged among the neighboring farmers because of its poor quality. In Boro season, most of the produced was consumed by the families as paddy (88%) and a small portion (3.2-4.0%) was exchanged among the farmers. About 3.07% seed of BRRI dhan30, 1.65% seeds of BRRI dhan 31 and 5.44% seeds of BRRI dhan34 in T.Aman season and 3.06% seeds of BRRI dhan28 and 3.70% seeds of BRRI dhan29 were sold as seed for future user.
