Conservation Strategies and Development of Integrated Culture System for Endangered Fish Species in Some Selected Beels of Mymensingh and Bogra Region

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Data on abundance and production of fish species and their status from Charpait and Hasta beel under Mymensingh and Bogra districts were collected through physical communication and direct interview of fishermen, UFO and other sources associated with the beels. A total of 6 & 7, 4 & 1, 4 & 6, 2 & 1, and 8 & 9 species were found available, vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered and not available in Charpait and Hasta beel, respectively. Present availability status of different fish species was observed to be slightly higher in Hasta beel than those in Charpait beel. Total fish production was consistently higher in Hasta beel than those in Charpait beel.

Objectives:

A) Overall Objectives: To study the present status of indigenous fish species in 2 selected beels in Mymensingh & Bogra region; to develop integrated culture system for endangered fish and available indigenous fish species in 2 selected beels of Mymensingh and Bogra region;

B) Objective of the year (2006-07) : To collect base-line data of two beels at Mymensingh and Bogra region; to study the limnological and biological parameters (plankton and benthos) and soil characteristics in order to assess the productivity status of the beels;

Methodology:

Two beels were selected from Mymensingh and Bogra region in collaboration with DoF. A benchmark survey was carried out all around the spots of the two beels. Information about the fish catching system in the beel were also collected from different Matsha Somaboy Samity around the beel. For the estimation of primary productivity and benthic fauna, water and soil samples from various locations of beels were analyzed at fortnightly intervals. All the fishing units were enumerated by type of gear through a frame survey. Data on resource and abundance of fish species were collected from Upazilla Fishery Office and from other sources where available through physical communication. Achievement/Findings:

Habitat degradation has recently become a great constrain for fish biodiversity in most aquatic ecosystems of Bangladesh, and thus remarkable changes have already been observed in natural fish populations such as either in stock erosion or in genetic deterioration. Owing to environmental modifications and man-made changes affecting spawning and feeding grounds, abundance of many endemic fish species have declined severely in the last few decades and many of the commercially important fish species have become endangered or to be extinct. Under the prevailing situation, development and dissemination of production techniques for commercially important endangered and local catfish are to be emerged from the designated studies, which in turn will further facilitate their conservation in natural depressions (beels), haors, rivers and other related water bodies. Additionally, more new polices and strategies should be formulated to promote the rational and sustainable use of variously highly productive ecosystems.
