Determination of Hazardous Heavy Metals in Fish and Shrimp and Elucidation of Their Bioaccumulation Machanism

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heavy metals viz copper (Cu), Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) in shrimp/fish, soil and water were determined. In chapila fish Cu concentration ranged from 9.73-11.0 mg/kg, Zn 98-188 mg/kg, Cd 1.1-1.4 mg/kg, Pb 8.9-9.3 mg/kg and Cr 6.5-7.2 mg/kg. In perse fish Cu concentration ranged from 6.65-8.2 mg/kg, Zn 72-108 mg/kg, Cd 1.2-1.7 mg/kg, Pb 7.8-9.0 mg/kg and Cr 3.2-7.8 mg/kg. In golda shrimp Cu concentration ranged from 20-86 mg/kg, Zn 56-135 mg/kg, Cd 0.9-5.0 mg/kg, Pb 1.6-33.0 mg/kg and Cr 0.5-2.10 mg/kg. In Bagda shrimp Cu concentration range from 73-141 mg/kg, Zn 75-89 mg/kg, Cd 0.3-4.9 mg/kg, Pb 9.2-23.8 mg/kg and Cr 1.2-8.7 mg/kg. In soil sample heavy metal concentration range was found as Cu 31-68 mg/kg, Zn 80-112 mg/kg, Cd 2.0-3.0 mg/kg, Pb 24.0-46.0 mg/kg and Cr 3.2-5.6 mg/kg. In water sample range of heavy metal concentration was found as Cu 0.01-0.05 mg/kg, Zn 0.001-0.02 mg/kg, Cd 0.003-0.26 mg/kg, Pb 0.01-0.19 mg/kg and Cr 0.01-0.05 mg/kg. Data reveals an alarming level of concentration of zinc, lead, copper and cadmium in soil and fish/shrimp in the Rupsha river.

Objectives:

1. To assess the heavy metal contamination on fish, shrimp waters and sediment of the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers in Khulna; to assess the means through which the hazardous heavy metals gain access into the fish and shrimp; and to assess the occurrence of formalin in fish at Dhaka Metropolitan city.

2. To determine the occurrence of heavy metals in shrimp, waters and sediment of the Rupsha river in Khulna; and to assess the occurrence of formalin in fish at Dhaka Metropolitan city markets.

Methodology:

Shrimp, soil sediment and water samples were collected from the Rupsha river in Khulna monthly, put in ice boxes or freezer packs and transported to our laboratory at Freshwater Station (FS), Mymensingh. Heavy metals in water, sediment, feed and shrimp were determined by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) machine and bioaccumulation mechanism of heavy metals in shrimp was elucidated.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study will provide information regurding the occurrence of hazardous heavy metals in fish and shrimp, water and sediment of the Rupsha river. Based on the results, bioaccumulation mechanism of heavy metals in fish and shrimp will be determined.
